Lawrence residents say new garbage cans are stinking up the city

On a bit of a different note...I happened to notice that some days my trash is picked up by collector opening the can, reaching inside & taking out trash bag(s), which are then put into truck. (sometimes small loose trash being left inside of the can) The can isn't used at all to deposit trash into the truck. I've also noticed this is faster than engaging the can with the truck, so assume this is the reason. Now I am one of the people who didn't use a can before. I carried the bag(s) to curb to be picked up, so now must make the trip to retrieve said can & return to the front of the house. (I work odd hours so sometimes the can has to sit on curb a while)

If the can isn't used for trash pickup, why can't I put my one small bag on the curb to be picked up by hand? Since that's what they are doing anyway.

What was your favorite book as a kid?

Beautiful Joe - Margaret Marshall Saunders

Published in 1893 and based on a true story. It's the story of a dog rescued from extreme & cruel abuse by a loving family. It's told from the narrative of the dog. Interestingly done. Ms Saunders wrote it as a story for a Humane Society contest; which it won & was published the following year as a novel. It received world wide attention...and this was in the late 1890s.

The Little House on the Prairie series - Laura Ingalls Wilder

There was another which I read multiple times & somehow never committed the title to memory. Just don't know how that can possibly be, but it is! The story of a woman named Polly traveling with a wagon train (west?) as an independant person. Dressed in the clothing of a man; riding astride a horse, etc. Not acceptable behavior for a female at that time. I have tried several times to track this book down, but no luck. How I ever read this (multiple times!) & don't know the title is beyond me. I would blame the fact that I was 8-10 years old, but I read the other two around the same time.

Lawrence Humane Society seeking temporary housing for up to 60 dogs

The Kansas Department of Agriculture charges the $10 fee, not the Humane Society. Typically when a person fosters an animal, the cost of regular maintence is part of that choice to foster.

The Shelter offering to provide that helps people willing to give of their time & homes.

Game time

Being able to come up with the money to create/build a new recreation center isn't the only consideration. It's also extremely important to consider if the city can afford to own, operate & staff this additional facility now & in the future. During a time when it's become difficult & challenging to just be able to maintain current infrastructures and provide needed services to the entire city, one has to seriously question this idea.

Kansas University changing scholarship offerings for incoming freshman

I think this is great for incoming KU freshmen. We personally went through the experience of dealing with available freshman scholarships not being renewable. And it was extremely frustrating. Especially since she has chosen majors not in engineering or business and money isn't available in her areas of study. Every semester brings that stress of figuring how to cover expenses. So I am happy to know that this will change for new qualifying freshmen.

But having a child, who as a freshman two years ago, would have qualified to have full tuition & fees covered by this new scholarship arrangement...well...how can I describe my feelilng......
