Fast-food chicken restaurant coming to west Sixth Street; 23rd Street chicken wing chain begins work; urgent care deal falls through

Why is it when Lawrence gets a new type of restaurant, we then get saturated with 10 of the same type. Do we REALLY need 5 chicken restaurants? Why can't we get Red Lobster, Olive Garden, TGI Fridays, some of those???? There aren't enough steakhouses in Lawrence either. Let's spread the love for us seafood and beef eaters :)

Parks and Recreation drafting tobacco ban for all department-operated land, including all parks

I'm curious as to HOW and WHO is going to enforce this policy? Not that I don't agree that you shouldn't be smoking around the kids and throwing burning cigarettes on the ground where someone can step on them or a child pick up, but this is up there with the fireworks ban - pretty much unenforceable.

Parking questions loom for Here @ Kansas apartment project as high-tech parking company files for bankruptcy, stops work on project

Don't they have to have a final inspection by the city to allow it to open? Making sure all is completed? If they haven't fulfilled their parking agreement, they don't open until they do. I'm sure this will end up like the Varsity House - bait and switch kinda thing. Here's your proposal .. oh you didn't do what you said .. here's a slap on the wrist and a tiny fine to make it go away. Make them accountable to the city and taxpayers! We're tired of carrying the bill for these messes!

Editorial: Fairgrounds future

While I like the idea of updating the fairgrounds, is that enough room for the animals that come to the fair? I only see 2 barns that I can tell are for livestock. Just curious.

Illegal firework violations can cost hundreds of dollars, jail time; police planning vigorous enforcement

This was a city ordinance, the police have to enforce it - so don't blame them about making a buck .. and I'm sure they are just as frustrated with it as most of us are!

Talk of a new dog park and a $10 per year dog license requirement for Lawrence; Quonset hut debate in East Lawrence on hold; city manager search update

If you want to put a fee on my dog, you'd better put one on the cats. I'm sick of other peoples cats running around the neighborhood getting on my car, going through my trash and irritating my dogs who are in a fenced in yard! We already pay high costs for all the shots the pets have and they have a rabies tracking number - why don't you use that number and require rabies vaccinations! My dogs would NEVER use the dog park and I don't feel I should have to pay for it. Let people who want to use it pay a monthly or yearly fee. Why are we always spending money and time on these things when there are so many other things that need to be fixed or addressed!

Employers tell state's education leader about need for more workforce skills

I'm amazed that we continue to graduate high school students without real life skills. Most have never had a checking or savings account and don't know where to even begin to open one or how to maintain it. They don't know anything about getting apartments, utilities and the costs associated with that. I know as a parent, I talk with and help my kids, but there are many that don't have that or are their parents are just as confused. Why isn't a semester of these types of things taught in high school? Our country is in a mess, and debt is so high for most of us. If we took some time to help these kids understand student loans, interests, credit cards and payback/payout information it might make a difference in the choices they make as they head off to college or the working world. May not, but we don't know if we don't try.
