Journal-World parent company considering demolition of large downtown Lawrence building

I'm confused. For years the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Lawrence fought development of a mall. Part of that was competition and part was because it would take away from Historic Downtown Lawrence. Now we're looking at another large building, along with what is already been done and is continuing to be done to New Hampshire Street and the new potential structure on Vermont. While these buildings do look nice and are cleaning up some areas, we haven't been able to move around these streets (especially New Hampshire) for years! Add more on Mass and Vermont and that runs away business from downtown, I avoid it like the plague now as it is. Are the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Lawrence now BACKING this development? How many of them have any ties to these developments? Where are people going to park - it's already hard to find places if you're going downtown to eat or for an event? What incentives will be considered - yet again, for the taxpayers to take on the burden of? How will the tie it to the Historical District of Lawrence?

Fast-food chicken restaurant coming to west Sixth Street; 23rd Street chicken wing chain begins work; urgent care deal falls through

Why is it when Lawrence gets a new type of restaurant, we then get saturated with 10 of the same type. Do we REALLY need 5 chicken restaurants? Why can't we get Red Lobster, Olive Garden, TGI Fridays, some of those???? There aren't enough steakhouses in Lawrence either. Let's spread the love for us seafood and beef eaters :)

Parks and Recreation drafting tobacco ban for all department-operated land, including all parks

I'm curious as to HOW and WHO is going to enforce this policy? Not that I don't agree that you shouldn't be smoking around the kids and throwing burning cigarettes on the ground where someone can step on them or a child pick up, but this is up there with the fireworks ban - pretty much unenforceable.

Parking questions loom for Here @ Kansas apartment project as high-tech parking company files for bankruptcy, stops work on project

Don't they have to have a final inspection by the city to allow it to open? Making sure all is completed? If they haven't fulfilled their parking agreement, they don't open until they do. I'm sure this will end up like the Varsity House - bait and switch kinda thing. Here's your proposal .. oh you didn't do what you said .. here's a slap on the wrist and a tiny fine to make it go away. Make them accountable to the city and taxpayers! We're tired of carrying the bill for these messes!

Editorial: Fairgrounds future

While I like the idea of updating the fairgrounds, is that enough room for the animals that come to the fair? I only see 2 barns that I can tell are for livestock. Just curious.
