Praeger says Congress shouldn't defund Affordable Care Act

Good point, as there are doctors in Lawrence who do not take Medicare and some who will not bill any insurance company.

Anthropology Department opposes leave for Guth

I'm sure the mutual decision for him to begin his sabbatical early had nothing to do with the threats against him, KU and the other David Guth, by nut cases from across the country after his tweet went viral. Nope, nothing at all. Given the circumstances, I think it was the safest solution for him and KU.

Ottawa El Mezcal manager charged with immigration violations

El Mezcals other distinction is the number of health department violations. They had every restaurant in Lawrence beat. Maybe they still do, but I've not noticed any postings at LJWorld online in months.

Letter: Ineffective Congress

"My fear is that it won't work and that it will wreak economic havoc on our country."

I think that fear has been generated by the obstructionists and their media. I agree with most of the sentence, except the subject of that sentence for me would be climate change, not the Affordable Care Act. No act with such sweeping changes is perfect in the very beginning, and I'm pretty sure this one will need some tweaking, but in the long run it is a plan that is long overdue and will better serve the majority than the minority.

Any additional economic havoc in the U.S. won't be caused by Obamacare, it will be caused by some of the worst obstructionism, and cronyism, this country has seen in over a hundred years.

Bicylist injured after colliding with vehicle on East 23rd Street

Given that many tenants and most KU students don't get water bills, it would be nice if landlords and KU shared that info with tenants and students since they comprise at least half of the bike riders in Lawrence.

Bicylist injured after colliding with vehicle on East 23rd Street

Are you talking about the sidewalks in the Oread neighborhood? Property owners are responsible for the condition of their sidewalks. If you believe they are "more dangerous than the street" to walk on, then notify the city.
Most sidewalks along major streets, ie, 23rd St, Billings Pkwy, W. 6th St. are in fairly good condition.

Bicylist injured after colliding with vehicle on East 23rd Street

I suspect part of the problem is that local bicyclists don't know they can legally ride on uncongested sidewalks in Lawrence, with the exception of downtown Lawrence. I grew up in a town where it was illegal to ride a bike on sidewalks except in residential neighborhoods, so when I moved here I assumed the same rule applied and didn't learn the truth of the matter until just a few years ago.

Professor getting death threats over NRA tweet, colleagues support his free-speech rights

You should be, FarleyM, if you live in Kansas, as they are Kansas pols. Rep Virgil Peck who advocated hunting down immigrants and "shooting them down like pigs" from helicopters and Kansas House Speaker Mike O'Neal who emailed a prayer to his fellow Kansas GOP legislators advocating the death of President Obama. Their fellow GOP cronies didn't call for their resignations, so it seems a tad ludicrous for them to ask for Guth's dismissal for his equally stupid remark.

Editorial: Distracting signs

How about more meaningful signs, such as: "Whatta u lookin' at?"; "Hang up the phone, Stupid!" or "Pay Attention!". LOL.
