McLouth student Justin Johnston shot, killed on school trip to Costa Rica; classmates returning to Kansas

Wow...i found a review of the hotel on trip advisor.

http://www.tripadvisor.ca/Hotel_Revie...

I would not want my kid to stay there. It was ranked 60th out of 65 hotels in that town. One review said cockroaches shouldn't even stay there. I think the quality of the hotel just shows that the tour company is focused on the bottom line moreso than the comfort and safety of their travelers.

These posts that blame Justin and defend the chaperons, tour company, or hotel are severely misguided. There is the idea of personal responsibility, but can we place that burden on a 17-year old child?

There were many poor decisions that led to this tragic accident. First thing I ask is why were high school kids staying at hotel that barbed wired and armed security? Couldn't have the school or tour company provided better accommodations? I've been to parts of South America where hotels commonly have armed security, but never did I see this in Costa Rica. It is safe country and as Vertigo mentioned, the homicide rates there are actually lower than in the US.

I wonder if the tour company even checks out the rooms they book? There are lots of complaints here, even one that says their hotel was in the red light district. http://www.complaintsboard.com/compla...

RIP Justin Johnston
