Another snow day would force Lawrence school district to make up for lost time

I have mixed feelings about it. While it's a scheduling inconvenience for families, the pressure has only intensified on our teachers. Between planning, grading, in-house meetings, training requirements, and budget cuts (which, if nothing else, have left so many classrooms without the para support that makes teaching children of all abilities more feasible), I will always have a hard time disparaging the teachers for bargaining for whatever tools/time they need to keep them inspired to keep our kids engaged in learning. That's no easy task. God love 'em.

Historian Richard Norton Smith discusses Ronald Reagan's legacy at Dole Institute of Politics lecture

It was a great discussion. The Dole Institute's done an outstanding job of providing fascinating programming to our community, regardless of political affiliation. Kudos are due.

Carrie Neighbors sentenced to 8 years in prison for selling stolen goods from Yellow House store

every time i see a smitty post, i can't help but envision an armchair Nancy Grace shrieking, "BOMBSHELL TONIGHT!"

maybe all you're missing, smitty, is a calling card (a TV show, a shrewish scowl, and the ability to interrupt anyone who disagrees with you). just a thought.

Would you donate your body for medical research?

Absolutely. If they can rummage around and find something that still works, have at it.

Tiny kitten rescued from Lawrence storm drain available for adoption at Lawrence Humane Society

I have ideas to toss in other local icons...Liberty Hall, Waxman, Old West Lawrence, the eagles on the Kaw...the Hat Lady!...

And, yes, by all means, it should have an undercurrent of familiarity that make the Lawrence parents snicker. Well, those that have been around long enough to know the pop culture of it.

By the way, there used to be storm drains that would go through Old West Lawrence that my brothers knew all about. I remember taking my kids and nieces on a flashlight tour of one, too, for as far as we could go before we got scared. We were imagining we were solving a mystery and looking for clues. Great spooky fun.

I'm sure there's something around by way of oral history, if nothing else, that could be found about that system.

Working together

That *is* good news. By all means, fill that business park and keep industry coming.

A male rat is called bucks, so maybe we can throw an educational tidbit in there and call him Buck. That's very Kansas-y, yes?

Catfish Charlie was the most toxic of the fishing baits my father used, so maybe we should go with Chuck. Chuck and Buck.

We can fit the gals in somewhere. Maybe they'll be they'll come along during the coalition's adventure down to the battlefield. They'll probably be hanging out near the emu oil stand at the Farmer's Market, eyeballing the reasonably priced bouquets and feeding on dropped teething biscuits.

Just a thought...
