Obama: 'We have picked ourselves up,' fought back

Oh really, Obama worships God? Does he do this from the same church that he belonged to for years that preached hate? How soon we forget.

Obama: 'We have picked ourselves up,' fought back

You would be better served to thank those that are too lazy to work and would rather live off of those that have. I believe that if you look at the disasters that have taken place (look at the east coast recently) and you may see what God thinks of us as a nation.

Public input sought on trash, recycling report

It would probably be a lot better if you did a little research before you lecture someone else. It was common practice for several to work 4 hour days on trash pickup services. Would getting off 4 hours earlier be a nice lunch break for you? I saw this happening almost daily for many years. Then you might want to try observing the gas station in North Lawrence and watch the trash trucks sitting there for 15-30 minutes most days. They are getting food and sitting around eating. Is that a lunch or break? I assume that you have a relationship with someone at the sanitation department and don't mind paying a little extra because you are receiving a significant return. Some of the rest of us are on limited incomes and can't afford the extra outgoing of our small income.

But I will agree in one instance with you. City, county, state and federal governments are too insistant on doling out our money for poor reasons and this is another one of them. For over forty years I was required to give 8 hours of work for 8 hours of pay.

Solid Waste Task Force calls for required trash carts

Let's see, I put out one trash bag about every three weeks that I toss over a six foot high fence in my back yard and have never injured myself and now I may be required to rent a container from the city? Maybe we could put a computer on the trash truck to monitor all of those that put out an excessive amount of trash and charge them extra for the extra work that they create and quit overcharging those that keep their trash output down. That's probably too easy for the pea-brains that we have running this show. I live on a very limited retirement income with no COLA and no work years longevity bonus at the end of the year as some city workers have and somehow I have to maintain that budget. This is probably a long shot but just maybe these city people and task forces could realize that we are not all made of money. Nah, never happen here. Just a dream because they don't care.

A time to honor veterans

Pleiku, I concur with you whole heartedly as well. People like Alceste and gogoplata have had so much crap forced up their you know what that they tend to believe about anything against the military. I will say now that I proudly served from 1970 to 1974 so that people such as these could spout their Bull. I remember the days of getting spit on in the San Francisco airport on my return from Southeast Asia as if it was yesterday and gee, I don't remember killing any babies. I did what I was asked to do by my government whether I wanted to or not. Other options that were open was to run off to Canada. Did either of you have Canadian addresses or are you too young and don't remember?

Deep roots: Some of Lawrence's oldest family names are still thriving

Although not a prominent named family, there is also the Heine family from the Clinton area. Heinrich (Henry) Heine settled at Clinton on 15 April 1855, coming here from Germany, and a couple of his great grandson's, Rod & Raymond Heine, still live on the old homestead land. Buck and Schneck names among others in the Lawrence community descend from Henry. If we truly want to dig enough I'm sure there are several descendants from many other early settlers still around.

Amyx becomes 4-time mayor

TOB & 50 Year Resident:
Have you ever wondered why the grocery stores failed in North Lawrence. Evidently you never shopped at them. For one thing they were in a very small building leading to a lack of choice of products because of the lack of shelf space. And another thing was the prices were significantly higher . It was actually cheaper to drive across town to get your groceries all in one place. Made up the difference for what you paid in gas. If we would have had a legitimate grocery store in North Lawrence maybe things would have been different.

I am a life long resident of Lawrence (over fifty years) and a resident of North Lawrence for about 27 of those years, a resident of East Lawrence, Central Lawrence and West Lawrence prior to my move here and I can honestly say that if I have to live in Lawrence I would rather live over here. Rarely will you find uppity people over here that think they are better than everyone else. We've grown to realize that we are the bastard children (as iwetmypants so eloquently stated) and pretty much learned to live with it. Not saying we are happy about it. While some of you in other areas of town moan one time about this or that and it is corrected we sit and wait for our time to maybe get a drainage system so water isn't standing in the road and so many other discrepancies that are neglected over here,
Please don't feel like I am inviting you to come to the north side of the river to see what life is really like because I enjoy listening to you all crying all the time about how bad you have it. Just brings a tear to my eyes as I think about it.

Please don't fret though. We will continue to pay our taxes so you can live the pampered life that you so richly deserve.

City of Lawrence employees in line for higher-than-expected year-end bonus

If you are complaining about this nice little perk then you are better served to save your breath because your city commisioners and especially the city manager do not even care what you think. Try e-mailing them and see how easily they blow you off. They don't care what you think. Didn't you know that money grows on trees as far as they are concerned. They even consider it okay to pay some city employees when they are not even at work. They finish there job, they go home with pay. Oh the life, I wish that I would have had it so nice in my over 35 years of working for the same employer. Just get it into your heads that you and what you think do not matter. Just pay your exorbitant taxes that continue to rise and leave the hard decisions of how to throw away your hard earned money to the experts. This is more total bull____ from people that don't give a crap about you.

Ronda...I have been collecting the old songs that I grew up listening to in the 50's, 60's and 70's for several years by either buying the cd's or downloading from the internet (not illegally). Many groups from back in the 50's and 60's would not be recognized by many today. I have a list on my computer of a lot of the songs and the groups (Person) who sang them. Many of the songs were done by numerous artists over the years. Many of the songs that I and others have mentioned have brought back good memories for me as well.
