New report finds city's broadband market sub-par

Hey Chad,
Looks like some construction is finally taking place at Wakarusa and 6th St on the open lot next to the Starbucks that just went in. I believe it was originally discussed to be a tire shop but that was a while ago. With them staking out the lot and looking like construction will start, is there any update on the plans for that lot? Still a tire shop?

Popular breakfast restaurant Milton's returning to downtown in space currently occupied by Loopy's

Hahahaha! So now, to go back to Milton's, I have to wait for even fewer tables. Good luck convincing me of that. I think I'll just stick with the new, expanded location at the Mirth. Turns out, I wasn't missing Milton's nearly as much as I thought.

Lawrence approves citywide curbside recycling program to begin in October 2014

So picking up glass isn't any "better" than what Deffenbaugh currently offers? That alone is a huge win to me. As to the every other week, I agree completely but I think it's a bigger win to get glass.

Letter: Recycling choice

Deffenbaugh doesn't take glass...it's apples and oranges if they don't add it. Besides, do they really do anything better than the city workers do with trash? Sure, I wish the new service was every week but as long as they take glass,I think it's an improvement.

He didn't say anything about more machinery. The issue he sees, and I tend to agree with, is that Lawrence focuses on getting roads perfect before moving on. There is no way it should take until 9 pm on Friday night to make a first pass on a road, flat or not in a town the size of Lawrence. The only two measurable snow falls this year, it has been almost 48 hours before the streets near Langston Hughes have gotten one pass to clear them.

City issues permits for $11 million in apartment construction, $600K expansion at Hallmark

Yeah, because more retail on that location would have been terrible for the intersection / neighborhood. Big box stores won't build at 6th and the SLT because existing retail is not close enough to the location, but when presented with opportunities to expand the reach of retail, we deny the plan and push more apartments...makes sense, really, it does.

I'm pretty sure that the developers had plans for some retail on that location even after Lowes but it wouldn't pan out because we didn't need more retail. 6th street is commercial / retail all the way from downtown to Wakarusa but adding more after Wakarusa isn't in the plans???

Legislation seeks to block federal gun laws on Kansas firearms

The marijuana laws don't protect anyone in California, Colorado, and Washington from federal prosecution. The federal government just doesn't come in and do anything about them right now. If those laws said that the ATF agents would be prosecuted under state law for doing something, I'm pretty sure the federal government would care a bit more.

Documentary film crew to do interviews in Lawrence for veterans project

Random question. I really like Chad 's Town Talk stories but it seems like since it got converted to a blog, we are only getting one story a day now much more than not. It used to always be three...is this just a time of year thing or are my expectations too much? I miss the three stories a day.

Curbside recycling committee recommending city sign contract with Hamm Companies for local recycling center; question of whether to accept glass still undecided

We usually fill our recycling every week as well (which is why we don't fill our City trash can). So yeah, to go to 95 every two weeks will result in less recycling. Plus, if you include glass into the proposal, which should happen in my opinion, I will fill my recycling can easily each week.

Currently, I use another local recycling company to pick up glass only for $5 / month on top of the Deffenbaugh cost of $5 per month for other recycling. However, if you put these other choices out of business, you should provide those services, especially when they are available and not that much more expensive.

I'm pretty sure Deffenbaugh's can currently is actually smaller than what they are proposing we have with the city wide service. I have the big city trash can and it is definitely bigger than Deffenbaugh's. I am hoping for weekly with glass. The majority of my recycling is glass and if we have options to pick it up, it should happen. I'm NOT going to save all my glass and drive it to a recycling center when for less than $1 per month I can have it picked up. So the end result, it ends up in the landfill with all the other trash.
