Power failure leaves thousands in area without light and heat

I am an "East-sider". Apparently, things that happen here stay here, because the media doesn't care.

This entire side of town had no electricity from 9 pm until midnight on December 6. Granted, some on the west side may not care if the east side freezes to death. But, I at least expected to find an explanation of why we were freezing last night on www.ljworld.com.

Last night I was at work, in the dark, calling everyone I knew for information about the power outage. Nobody could find any information. As I visited local media websites this morning I came to the frightening conclusion that when I am "in the dark", so is the local media.

The higher power of Addiction

As someone who was once in ministry, i am interested in what this book has to say. It sounds more political than anything else, but I will hold my judgment for now. I am interested in finding out how many people are reading this article because they are recovering from religious addiction.

Plan would require new bars to get permits

Considering changes in zoning laws, to prevent crime at local establishments, is a step in the right direction. The City Commission is at least showing that public safety is a concern.

Last summer, law enforcement officials decided to take a stand against drugs at Wakarusa Music Festival. They used all available personnel and technology to prove to peace loving people that they would not allow immoral behavior in our area.

Law enforcement was readily available for 24-hour surveillance, and prosecution of crimes committed at Clinton Lake. Surely, the City Commission will prove that keeping the heart of Lawrence peaceful is, at the very least, as important as keeping our lake drug-free.

2 arrested downtown for gun violations

Many thanks to the LPD for keeping our downtown safe. Thank you Douglas County Sheriff's Department for keeping the peace in southeast Lawrence. And, thanks to the Highway Patrol for patrolling the highways coming into our town. I personally witnessed all three departments working together to keep us safe Thursday night into Friday morning.

Now, if we could just get the government to shut down businesses, like Last Call, that profit from crime and criminals.

Citizens, please don't give Dennis Steffes one red cent of your money. (Steffes also owns Coyote's.) Until he realizes that he is partially responsible for the increased gang presence and violence in Lawrence, he will continue drawing the rowdy crowds, and guns, into our peaceful town.

By the way, is it possible to send the bill for the police staffing and helicopter costs to Dennis Steffes?

Another liquor store robbery reported

Why are these thieves "unidentified"? Are these liquor store clerks drunk, blind, or are they just refusing to give details that could get this thug off the street?

A new round for the SLT

I was a child when I first heard about a bypass, now my children have grown up hearing about this. Two generations, several ideas, hundreds of wrecks (one that was almost tragic for my own family), and thousands (if not millions) of "research" dollars later, and I still cannot make safe left hand turns from my neighborhood. Can't we all just get along, allow the traffic to keep moving, and make Lawrence a safer town for it's citizens? BUILD THE BYPASS!

Which route do you think is best for the SLT?

Man robs liquor store at gunpoint

By the shape of his nose, I think he is white. He does look warm, but he doesn't look armed. He does appear to have somehting in his pocket, though. I wonder what it might be.... by looking at these pictures we will never know anything, except the guy looked warm, and maybe white, and made a few dollars by frightening the employee.

Do we know what he was drinving, or which direction he was heading? Do we even know how long he stood there with that invisible look on his face?

It was noon, for crying out loud! Why don't we have a better description?

Pump prices fluctuating

Metro areas have different EPA regulations for their fuels. Lawrence is not required to include these smog control additives. So, in the summer, prices should be lower here. By the way, the front page was outdated at time of publication. If you want up-to-date gas prices go to www.kansasgasprices.com.
