KU Athletics releases report that includes plans for $24.6 million Olympic Village
Olympic Village FAQ
Oh my gawd, where will people park?
The parking garage. If we can accomodate 16K for basketball then 5,000 should be no problem.
Why are my tax dollars funding this?
They're not. It will be privately funded.
Why does KU Athletics have to keep expanding and taking up land at KU?
This is land that is already in use for athletics.
What about all the additional traffic and street maintenance issues?
This actually is a good question. Seeing as KU already hosts baseball, softball and soccer at the same location, there won't be additional traffic to speak of. Track and field events might increase traffic, but only from one part of campus to another. 19th street has to get some much needed improvements before this is set into motion though.
Why can't this money be used for education?
Again, its private money. Competitive athletics brings in top notch student athletes and increases awareness and exposure for the university at large. A strong athletics program benefits the entire school? Don't believe me, ask a Big10 or SEC school. Ask Texas. These are schools whose academics and entire campus have benefited from the symbiotic relationship of athletics and academics. In the longrun this will be a big improvement to not only KU but the Lawrence community as a whole, as local businesses will see increased revenue as will the city.
