Opinion: Just asking: Is America crazy?

America is indeed crazy. Besides allowing too many people to own firearms, we have a very violent culture. Just look at how our society is reflected in the movies we make. In our movies and on TV, mass violence is accepted and depictions of love or sex in many cases is censored with an R or X rating. I don't see things getting any better until we improve our education system, provide better health care and mental health access for everyone, and we put some limits on who can legally own a firearm.

City approves partial closure of Massachusetts Street for outdoor movie

Gumnnuts, I agree, the city would probably have to hand out another parking garage, 20 year tax abatement, and special tax district to make it "economically feasible" to the rich developer who took it on.

City voices support for $725k loan to shelter but wants further discussion of terms

I hope the gamble pays off for the city. I guess they can always raise taxes on the rest of us if it doesn't work out, right?

City approves partial closure of Massachusetts Street for outdoor movie

Why not? Because someone might want to buy out and tear down the Tap Room or the Sandbar to put up an apartment building or a hotel and this would mess with their traffic flow.

Homeless shelter seeks $725,000 loan from city

If this is approved it would set a very bad precedent. The city should not be in the business of giving out loans or giving "special" tax districts to developers. I agree srj, what's to stop other organizations from asking for loans from the city or other developers from asking for their own "special" (read private) tax districts?

Downtown promoter seeks to close part of Massachusetts Street for free, outdoor movie

Why not just put on a free movie in the theatre itself to celebrate the anniversary? They'd still get all the money they're trying to make on the concessions and they wouldn't be blocking traffic for a movie most people have seen a dozen times already. Or better yet, just show it in South Park and keep Mass. Street open.
