Crews extinguish couch fire in northern Lawrence garage

You might want to read the that first paragraph again, "garage in northern Lawrence Tuesday morning without the it causing any major damage to a duplex."

Lawrence voters approve $18 million library expansion

It will be interesting to see if the same people who voted YES on the library expansion be the first ones complaining when their taxes go up.

Brick by Brick: New York Street project uncovers and restores a piece of Lawrence history

I see no mention how they plan on snow removal come this winter. Would it not be more difficult for the snow plows as to not dislodge any of the bricks when removing snow. And how does sand/salt mixture effect bricks?

Douglas County commissioners open budget hearings, discussion of 16.6 percent property tax increase

It just amazes me that our dear county commissioners and county administrator believes that we can pull extra money out of thin air. I want to know what rose colored glasses they are looking thru. Get back to the bare basics that are needed in these hard times. I don't think that it is too much to ask our local government to set an example by cutting out unnecessary spending.

Library project goes to voters

The article mention a three story parking garage, my question is will you have to pay to park in the parking garage at the library like you do now? Why haven't the powers to be who run the library thought of doing some fundraising event to help with the cost instead hiking on more property tax when many people are struggling now on meeting their financial obligations as it is. I am all for improvements, but this is bad economically time to be asking the taxpayers to fork over more money that they may not have.

Lyon Street repaving project to run Tuesday through Friday

It will nice to have Lyon street repaired from North second to third, but will they be repairing Lyon from third to fourth as well?

Lawrence losing shoppers

Why does everyone of our commissioners along with our appointed mayor believe that if you build it they will come. Come on commissioners wake-up...we do not nor can Lawrence support more retail shops in either section of town. What the citizens of Lawrence have been screaming for,for many years is more opportunity to improve the job market within our city. But for whatever reasons thoughs opportunities never develop and we the people of Lawrence continue to work out of town. Until Lawrence improves it job market it won't support an increase in retail market.

Once snow melts, potholes expected to be less prevalent than years past

I agree about the street conditions from Elm St across the railraod track continuing down North third...it's like you hit a war zone! North third is falling apart. There are so many potholes on North third that there is no way to avoid them. The city should of repaired that detour before the road contruction began on North second street.

City issues more than 140 tickets for unshoveled sidewalks

For those of you who shoveled their sidewalks and still received a warning letter...take a photo of your work at shoveling your sidewalk and take it with you to court. Like the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words.
