City of Lawrence begins using new automated trash truck

Yep. Five years and counting here. No broken carts. No trashed mailbox. If there's extra stuff, the guys get out and pick it up. And the arm puts the cards back down exactly where it was picked up (instead of where it usually ended up - blocking my driveway - when the guys picked it up manually. And my kid actually waits outside on the morning of trash day so he can watch the "robot truck" come by and do it's thing.

Letter: Gun ‘rights’

"We still will have our police, sheriffs, military, highway patrols, and National Guard." This is way overused but appropriate: "When seconds count, help is only minutes away."

Letter: Courage lacking

I propose a different way to tackle this problem. Why don't we simply create a law that makes it illegal to murder (or attempt to murder) someone? Then we can all have as many guns as we want but the new law would prevent them being used to harm anyone. Oh... wait... we already have that. That one doesn't seem to work, either.

Lawrence-based Wicked Broadband announces plan to install super-fast 1 gigabit Internet service to Lawrence neighborhood

"Montgomery said a nearly three-minute promotional video for his company took four hours to upload onto the Internet via a traditional connection in Lawrence." What exactly is a "traditional" connection? That's awfully slow.

Questions abound about Obama's KU visit

Questions certainly do abound. Ones like: "Will he still take time to come visit in the immediate wake of a terrorist attack on US soil?"

This week is Severe Weather Awareness Week. What steps do you take to prepare for severe weather?

I always follow my dad's lead when it comes to tornado warnings. When the sirens go off I go out and stand on the front porch. My wife doesn't seem to think that's the proper thing to do.

Letter: Run on guns

"The reason sales are down..."

You're exactly right. I was at Cabela's about two hours ago. They had one very-overpriced AR-type rifle. No high-cap magazines of any caliber. No .223 ammunition. They can't sell what they don't have regardless of the demand.

Letter: Climate priority

"Better name recognition" and "better image" do not necessarily go hand-in-hand. Often just the opposite.

If a restaurant gets a low score for its health inspection, do you still eat there?

As part of her training my wife spent several months assisting a county inspector with restaurant inspections. As a result there are a number of places where we to not eat. Other than that I don't pay much attention to the actual scores.

Have you been affected by the drought?

I was affected last month by a $660 water bill.
