Rude shirts a disservice to KU spirit, group says

I thought I saw the t-shirt for sale at the book store on 23rd street also.

Should a House committee consider a bill that would pre-empt Lawrence from adopting a domestic partner registry?

If the state already decided against gay marriage, I don't think Lawerence should try to dodge that ruling by setting up a gay registry.

Homeless census has 'stunning' result

I wonder if they've applied for section 8 housing. I thought that emergency applicants were moved to the front of the line.

Bush's budget cuts could leave low-income residents in the cold

Glad to see someone trying to obtain further education, but do we subsidize for that? I mean I can see getting financial aid for school if needed, but do they also qualify for public assistance due to low income/voluntary unemployment?

City asks state for advice on bar safety

Maybe if they received some sort of sentence for gun possession instead of being let off after arrested it might make more of an impact and they'd stay home and quit coming to Lawrence to party. Sounds like the police are doing a good job of catching them, they're just getting charges dropped later. Big deal.

More gun and drug arrests at Last Call

Doesn't matter much anyway since the article last week showed that the gun violators were all getting off, or having charges dropped. That was very disconcerting to read.

In the neighborhoods for 20 years

So do the newer neighborhoods have representatives, too, or is it just the older neighborhoods who don't want Lawrence to change from the way it was 50 years ago? Remember, these groups represent a small percentage of Lawrencians.

Chat about homeless issues with Steve Ozark

What we see of the homeless situation is mainly the vagrants loitering around downtown, begging for money, and sleeping at the library. I would be more apt to donate or vote for financial assistance for homeless if I knew it was going to families with school children, rather than the drunk guys we see. Hasn't the JW actually done articles interviewing some homeless guys who said they just liked being on their own and not working? I don't support them, and I don't think they should be able to stay at the shelter unless they are sober. That's enabling. Good luck, I'm glad someone is trying to help, but you can't help someone unless they are also trying to help themselves.

Tax plan may help low-cost housing

"Bowhunter, a builder's cost of capital is always part of a home price. A commercial loan per se does not require a motgage tax." -

oldgoof- the above is not correct. any real estate mortgage recorded with the county, whether by the builder the home buyer or anyone, has to pay the mortgage registration tax. So, it is true that a new home is being taxed on the builder and the buyer. Then it's taxed again every time it resales, unless the buyer pays cash.
