Midge Grinstead resigns after 14 years leading Lawrence Humane Society; Mike Wildgen named interim leader

I agree. I've been contributing over the years as well. Since this whole incident I am considering moving my money to Operation Wildlife or Wayside Waifs or others who also need money. I really resent the fact that no info has been given out all along. This Board may have been doing everything correctly, but who can know since very little info has been released to the public. Hiding behind confidentiality doesn't cut it for me. Information should be released on who made what decisions in the past 6 months. Why are the minutes of the Board meeting not posted online for members? Why do we get such carefully non-informative press releases 24 hours before the LJW publishes an article? I really dislike the way the Board has been operating and until this style of operation changes, I will have to consider donating to other well-deserving shelters who do a better job of communication and more willing to be publically accountable for their actions.

Kansas legislator suggests using hunters in helicopters to control illegal immigration, likens immigrants to feral hogs

I didn't vote for Brownback but I'm stuck with him anyway. Do I deserve him on that basis? I doubt everyone in SE KS voted for this guy either.

wow is this true?? I mean strictly speaking it was never completely NOT a kill shelter, but I was wondering if they were pushing for expansion and wanting to have fewer animals to make ends meet. if you are right, it's really sad. i can't say i've been very impressed by the employees i've come across at the shelter (some exceptions of course). i'm sure it's a hard job and pays poorly, but this whole lack of information is really putting me off. wayside waifs or other shelters also need my money.

sad. once again KS makes a national news/aggregate site for this kind of remark. just found Mr. Peck's remarks cited at memeorandum.com. the people of SE Kansas deserve better representation.

Should people be required to show identification when voting?

it's not just ID. it's proof of citizenship. I think having to show photo ID is stupid but I could live with it. proof of citizenship is ridiculous.

Kansas House gives preliminary approval to voter ID bill

this is so appalling. I don't have a passport and god knows where my birth certificate is. I've voted every election (including primaries) since I was old enough. And I am a US citizen but this requirement makes me think it's time to move to Canada. Just ridiculous. It's discriminatory enough to require photo ID's, but at least driver's licenses are fairly common.

I am thoroughly appalled that reasonable people are applauding this idiocy. As if KS has a lot of voter fraud. Every study has made it clear that voter fraud in KS is rare. My mom doesn't drive anymore! and she doesn't have a valid passport at 89--she doesn't deserve this stupidity. This is all about Kris Kobach trying to make a name for himself amongst far-right Republican and anti-immigrant activists because he wants to to go on to DC politics. He should be ashamed of himself.

Midge Grinstead reinstated as executive director of the Lawrence Humane Society

I support Midge G. and donate to the shelter, but I found this whole thing ... disquieting. And I have to agree with justareader, the organization at the shelter does seem a bit lacking. I imagine it's a question of lack of funds for adequate numbers of people (and possibly quality of people). It's also true, though, that compared to other shelters (other than the well-financed ones), LHS does a remarkable job and in the last 10 years has improved dramatically.

I decided I probably ought to volunteer more often and make evaluations based on personal experience before I continue to donate blindly. Still donating, but maybe will be volunteering more so I can be sure my money is being used the way I'd like. And pay more attention to board meetings and ongoing decisions.

good idea. does anyone know, by the way, if board meeting minutes are available to shelter members? if we can't always go to the meetings?

Humane Society director on leave

Thank you Mr. DuPree for reporting on this. I am pleased to hear that someone from LJW will be at the meeting.
