Despite campaign literature to the contrary, county officials confirm there's no legal finding that Douglas County Jail must be expanded

Please be more specific. I have no idea what BS you're referring to.

Douglas County legal counselor finds proposed Justice Matters petition legally invalid, but group says it can be fixed

It's no surprise that the attorney for the County would find fault with the petition. But other attorneys will be consulted and the peition will be revised. Just vote no to the proposition and the rest will fall into place.

Sixth-grade boy charged with felony after alleged shooting threat at Lawrence middle school

Unfortunately, this kind of Draconian punishment is what a lot of the district patrons (mostly parents) want. They think it helps keep their kids safe. I just hope this young man gets the help he needs. Once he gets in the juvenile justice system, we are more likely to "see more from him later".

But they made their decision before their "expert" had finished his work.

School board member: Parents 'frustrated' by frequency of recent school threats, district's communication methods

I really don't understand this frustration at all. The school staff has a responsibility to keep students safe, and while they are fulfilling that responsibility parents want a blow by blow description of what's going on. I have kids at South and LHS and once I know the safety plan, that's all I need to know. No other details are necessary.

Letter to the editor: We are not unique

There is nothing false in this letter. Just a realistic description of life in Lawrence.

Letter to the editor: We are not unique

I'm not sure I see anything deceitful in this straightforward letter which speaks the truth about life in Lawrence.

Judge gives man convicted of 14th Street stabbing a chance at sobriety on probation

Finally someone realizes that treatment is needed rather than jail. Hopefully there are resources available to support him in his efforts to stay sober, because he will need a lot of support. If you haven't experienced it, you can't know how difficult it is.

Activist groups kick off their campaign against jail expansion

How many of those "low risk" inmates who are farmed out probably should not be in jail in the first place? I would like to look at reallocating some of those funds that are spent on re-entry to help people stay out of jail in the first place.

Lawrence teen who murdered grandmother sentenced to more than 48 years in prison

This just makes me sick!!! Another case of someone with mental illness slipping through the cracks and now his life is ruined. Just compounds the tragedy.
