Thanks! Tonight should be a lot of fun, and I doubt it will go until 9:00 pm.

Taxi driver gets glimpse into many walks of life

I worked for Mid-West Taxi, and yes like the other people have posted they abuse the 1099 Independent contractors tax status. After working there for two months I figured out I was making less than five dollars per hour, so I quit. The IRS is supposed to be cracking down on 1099 contractor abuse. The IRS website says "You are not an independent contractor if you perform services that can be controlled by an employer (what will be done and how it will be done). This applies even if you are given freedom of action. What matters is that the employer has the legal right to control the details of how the services are performed." Both taxi companies (Mid-West and Jayhawk) control everything about what their employees do (there is a set schedule and a company dispatcher gives them their orders).

Lawmakers consider bill to keep Phelps family, Westboro Baptist Church from protesting funerals

Cynical would be to say, as many people believe, that the Phelps family does not actually believe what they say when they protest. Their whole shtick is to be as offensive as possible, then to sue anyone who violates their right to protest. The Phelps family are actually some of the best first amendment lawyers in the country. They have testified in front of the supreme court and won (Snyder v. Phelps), after which Albert Snyder (the man who's son was killed in Iraq who sued the Phelps and initially won $10 million) was forced to pay the Phelps $16,000.

Lawmakers consider bill to keep Phelps family, Westboro Baptist Church from protesting funerals

This is how the Phelps fund their movement. They go to cities and states that ban then from protesting. Get a citation. Then they appeal all the way to the state or federal supreme court. They represent themselves, and they are attorneys so when it is all over they sue for their attorneys fees and pay themselves. This is a terrible idea.

Legislators criticize emerging Kansas congressional maps

Having Lawrence in one congressional district seems like it would make that district a solidly democratic seat. Having Lawrence bifurcated into two districts looked suspiciously like gerrymandering.

Executive pay varies widely at Lawrence nonprofits

This has been an interesting article and discussion! Would you consider doing a piece on the lowest paid non-profit directors?

What do you know about Lawrence history?

There was another big film that was shot in Lawrence that no one ever mentions. Prime Cut with Lee Marvin and Gene Hackman has several scenes shot in Lawrence and has the LHS marching band. The movie is not very flattering to the mid west, but it is still worth watching. I always wondered why no one ever mentions it?

FDR defended

Right-wingers will do anything to try and slight FDR. Like you mentioned he was elected four times, he also defeated the two countries with modern militaries at the same time, and he created Social Security, the most popular and important government program ever. FRD is without a doubt the greatest president ever who was not named Abraham.

Lawrence man, 18, given probation term for sexual encounter with 14-year-old girl

Wow. That is totally defamatory. If you know about other people having sex with this person who are 18 then you should go to the authorities.
