Lawrence ranked second-worst-performing small metro area, according to new national economic index
opinions are like @@@@@@@'s everybody has one...
I would agree with our ranking being a 35 year resident I used to brag on Lawrence , not so much anymore.
My Issues
1. Jobs . Im in my 60's now and watch all these loser loadie kids walking around town plus the many neighborhoods that are low income high failure types. Add to that the current crop of parents bringing their feral children to school . I look and say how can these people pull themselves up here. There are not good jobs for the lower end. All of us smart ones can say that you just work harder and be aggressive and on and on but in my day I always had a better job to move to. Thats not the case here for our disadvantaged. Part time , crappy wages , crappy employers = little opportunity.
2. Growth . The well meaning nannies of Lawrence have all but strangled the growth here. every proposal brings out Agnes the Frog , Don't kill puppies , and the free hemp signs. Open up the faucet for awhile folks.
3. Retirement ? The latest incarnation of retiree attraction , a planned community. This is code for overpriced housing for the elderly. build some modest smaller floor plan homes that are not tied to a care organization. I want to lower my housing cost when I downsize but I don't want to live in old people jail. When I play my punk music loud it tends to cause trouble.
As for Lawrence as a destination for retirees , hmmmm. Most of the entertainment is for 25 year old potential alcoholics. Whats to do here ? Gotta be honest I'll maintain a small home or apartment here but am outta here upon retirement. to much to do and see to stay here and grow mold.
cheers

County seeking grant to study feasibility of 'food hub'
I think its a worthy idea
develop the local market = jobs
create some certainty on crop sales
create new crops to meet commercial demand
identify the size of the market
develop a credible cost effective way to provide natural raised meats into the market
problem is seasonality of it all , what are the restaurants / markets to do in winter months

Editorial: Planning vision
Serious , we already have the planning dept , planning commission , county commission , city commission , neighborhood groups during public comment periods , individuals at public hearings , seems there is plenty of community i.e. busy body input.

Editorial: Planning vision
The problem with "community planning" is typically the ones creating these documents have no skin in the game. They are not the ones writing the checks for property purchases , construction , years of start up operating costs. The ones writing the checks know what they want and where they want it to give their investment the best chance of succeeding.
Additionally the lawrence community is anti everything. Try to tear down a house in central Lawrence and see what happens. Three different community groups will cost you tens of thousands in legal fees and a years worth of headache.
I state the plans are faulty as soon as they are published , why bother.

Moisture comes in time for some trees, too late for others
Our neighbor , like many Lawrence residents , refuse to take care of their landscape never watering anything thru the summers. Results are dead evergreens , a huge dead tree in back yard , lost lilac bushes , dead lawn , cracked foundation.
cost to remove big tree $800
foundation $6-12,000
An extra 150 bucks of water over the summer would have prevented this

This plan is not worth the flip chart it was written on , kinda fluffy.

Planning commission votes to defer decision on Menards for one month
Looks like the first job for the " business facilitator" or whatever that position was called.
Gotta wonder why we even have this commission when the city will fall all over itself to give money away to Bio firms which create 3 jobs and reject a major revenue generator that wants to develop a distressed piece of ground.
HD , Lowes , and Menards all locate next to each other. It creates draw. Buyers can go and look over all companies in one easy swoop.
Its high time for the city commission to step in and dissolve the approval power of this commission. They are useless.

Big revenue decrease projected for fiscal year starting July 1
Sams accountants are in a tizzy. The room filled with pitchers of cool aid while they use their #2 pencils and Big Chief tablets to do some new "ciferin on these numbers".
While this report had to be on Sam the Sham's desk earlier he has been out preachin on how great his red state experiment is going. how disingenuous can one person be ?
Well he has gauranteed one increase , the number of babies born to women without access to legal birth control or abortion services. And he has gauranteed more guns in circulation and carried under coats.
If his economic platform sinks , which it will , his new campaign slogan......A gun for every baby.

City planners recommending denial of proposed Menard's store; Planning Commission to debate project Monday
That land is not preferred residential property. Who would want to live there given the choices in the city.
McCulloughs comments i.e. commercial space , residential use , sound quite lame. To suggest turning down a major revenue generator is ridiculous.
Now we all would rather had a Lowes but the city trashed that opportunity now didn't they.
