Teachers, district reach tentative deal on pay

No it would be nice if the teachers understood this point. There are many who leave school shortly after the students do on these days.

Trash task force sets recycling goal, public forum

It is actually very easy for the city to charge more for people who use more. Mandate carts and if you have extra bags they require a sticker bought from the city. Set the price for the stickers at whatever is necessary to make the trashier households pay their share. I know several places in KC that use this method. Each household gets 5 free stickers per year and the rest cost.

Trash task force sets recycling goal, public forum

While I agree that the city should stay out of the recycling and only encourage it by making it more expensive to throw away more than one cart of trash, to say the city trash services are fine the way they are is rubbish. The city has routinely run the services in the red and thats after they charge more than many similar sized cities in the area. The problem is the lack of automation and the 3 man trash crews. The city needs to move to carts and get down to 1 man trash crews. And the constantly repeated mantra of they will get down to 1 man per crew through attrition instead of laying people off needs to be abandoned. As soon as a truck is equiped to be run with one person that is all the people we have spots for. The city will need to bite the bullet and lay people off just like any other responsible business does when it no longer has a job for a person to fulfill.

First Bell: Lawrence school board to receive enrollment projections in new year; investigation continues into Dec. 1 bomb threat

We have 2 built in snow days. Make Free State go on one of them and they still have 1 snow day available before they have to adjust the schedule.

Trash tops list of issues for city commissioners to tackle in 2012

Extremely effective? Our trash collection costs are higher than neighboring communities.... AND the system ran at a loss for the city for the last several years. Yes it is nice that you can put literally anything at the curb and the city will pick it up, but that comes at a cost and that cost has not been captured in the bills.

City seeks proposals on Sixth St. left-turn lane project

To make that intersection better for traffic going both ways on 6th they really should add a right turn lane onto Iowa from Eastbound 6th also.

Bond support builds, as consolidation plans for Lawrence elementary schools lag

Firing teachers no, but consolidation does get rid of principals, office staff, lunch staff, and maintenance staff at the closed schools. All of which actually frees up money in the budget to allow more teachers.

Bond support builds, as consolidation plans for Lawrence elementary schools lag

What are you rambling about? How on earth does it cost more to ensure equity in larger schools than it does in smaller ones? It will cost less because the resources currently spending lots of time travelling between schools will be able to spend more time with students than in their cars. And I was opposed to the whole two stadium thing. It was a waste of money making two stadiums. But why let little things like facts interfere with your belief that dilapidated schools should be kept open at any cost, especially when it is those costs that are the reason for the increase in class sizes at schools across the district.

Bond support builds, as consolidation plans for Lawrence elementary schools lag

Yes, the budget for renovating would be from the bond issues. The ongoing operating cost benefits for the school district would go on indefinately. Why is that a hard concept to understand?

grammaddy I agree completely the city shouldn't be in the golf course business, however you and I both know that even if they did that the city couldn't funnel the savings into the school budget.
