January 1st Early Morning Law Enforcement & Fire/Medical wrap up
The JW can't possibly print every call. I believe this is just an overall summary. Go to the police departments website to see all the calls in the last 48- hours....

Suspect in bank robbery apprehended
Kudos to the LPD for a job well done!!!
Rockchalk- your comment peaked my interest so I checked LPD's website....452 calls in 48 hours.. Are you freaking kidding me!!! I was/am oblivious as to how busy our police department actually is, but rest assured, I will be more informed the next time they ask for additional personnel. Here are the links I found on their site:

Town Talk: Lawrence library, others in dispute over Kindle E-reader; Lawrence police leaders trying to increase numbers of 'patrol rifles'; a piece of North Lawrence history on the auction block
My point is...If the officers would "like" to carry the additional firepower that could possibly save your life or mine if the situation exist, they are REQUIRED to purchase the rifle themselves just as they are REQUIRED to buy their own pistol. I think it's ludicrous that cops have to buy their own weapons to carry. Do we make firefighters buy their own bunker gear too? Next the City will start making the cops buy their own bulletproof vests.

I don't have a problem with officers having the appropriate equipment to deal with an armed situation, but requiring the officers to purchase these rifles to use on duty is RIDICULOUS!!! Why in the world is the City not paying for these? I mean $1600 is a lot of money on a copy's salary and they are told which rifles they have to buy. That's like hiring a school bus driver to transport our children to school and then making them pay for the gas!!! Common Commissioners, do the right thing and fund these rifles for the officers!!

Police evidence facilities running out of space
Looks to me like they have been doing that for the past twenty some years. It is truly an embarrassment for the city to operate their law enforcement function in this manner. Let's get a unified building that holds the entire municipal judicial entities similar to what Olathe has done..Police building and Municipal Court, which also has space needs.

Occupy Lawrence told to leave
I'm thinking of taking my fifth wheel down there and posting up for a couple of weeks (sarcasm). The point has been made (I think)... They hate Capitalism, corporate America, and social welfare...it's time for them to go back home to their friends and families.

Officers, firefighters honored for heroic acts with inaugural valor awards
Congratulations to all of our public safety personnel for a job many of us would not do ourselves!! I will reiterate what Awelles said....We have some, if not, the best public safety personnel looking out for our welfare and safety. Thank you for a job well done..

Six-story hotel complex planned for downtown Lawrence
What purpose do you think the Library parking garage will serve? It will be the Fritzel/Eldridge parking garage.
Although there may be b#itching about the Compton and Fritzel enterprises, this town would be desolate without them. Free enterprise is what America is bases on...like it or lump it
