3-mill tax increase considered
What would it take to get something on the ballot to require voter approval for school board mil increases?

3-mill tax increase considered
Wasn't it just LAST YEAR that someone on the board stated (after the judgement by the state supreme court) something to the effect:
"We have plenty of money now, but we're going for broke." (in reference to a mil increase LAST YEAR)
Can someone find this. This is truly unbelievable - WHERE did all that money go already?

Secrecy can't hide Cheney power grab
b3 sez:
"How many terrorist attacks on the US have there been since? Whats that? Zero! You dont say!"
Are you f****** high? What would you call all those people who keep blowing up our troops in Iraq? Are those not attacks on the US, or are they not terrorists?
Now wait a second.... I was under the impression that all these attacks were NOT by terrorists, but were instead by Iraqi's wanting the U.S. out of their country. There are no terrorists, only innocent bystanders of an America gone crazy!
Which is it?

Immigration bill's failure a blow to Bush
"The defeat also underscored Bush's declining popularity and withering political capital within his own Republican Party. "
It could also be that the approval rating for Congress is below that of the President's.

The Census Bureau says Lawrence is losing population. Why do you think that is?
People are moving, plain and simple. We will probably be moving soon as well (I know many of you will be happy about that)
The place we are looking has house prices about 75% of what they are here and a 40% increase in salary for both of us. If and when we do move, I will wish everyone in this town good luck and hope for the best, but unless something is done about the way the city is run, it won't get any better.... they'll just keep taking and taking.

Owner suspects tainted food in dogs' deaths
Something else to consider:
Pet foods are not the only items coming out of China which contain things hazardous to our health. It has been claimed (I'm still looking into the validity) that makeup products, such as finger nail polish, facial makeup, etc contain lead. In addition, it is also claimed that harmful protein fillers are also being used in certain foods which are being imported from China for human consumption.
As always, confirm for yourself. I'm going to be cautious until I can verify the validity of these claims, but I'm not going to take any chances until I can.

Owner suspects tainted food in dogs' deaths
I was just about to comment about this. I'm sorry she lost her pets, but I was told by the city that I had to either bury my pet out of town or have the city pick up my dead pet. Ms. Collins lives within city limits also, so I'm curious as to why this hasn't been brought up.

City to bid on vacant Farmland property
"At one point, there was at least $6 million in a trust fund set aside by Farmland to clean the property. City leaders previously have said there is a second administrative trust fund with $8 million to $10 million. "
The city is in a budget crisis and there is supposedly 14 - 16 million set aside somewhere?
The logic in this purchase perplexes me. If you run a private firm, and you purchase some land which you KNOW needs cleanup for the purpose of investment, it is most likely that you are going to clean it up and do something with it which will yield a return.
There is NO reason for the city to buy this if a private firm is ready to bid. None... zero... zip. Step back, let the auction take place, and ZONE appropriately for what you want to be built there. Zone NOW instead of later... THAT'S what you are supposed to do as a responsible commission.
Quit spending OUR money on things YOU want to do. If you are worried about the cleanup, set down some regulations now on how these types of things need to be done and what goals need to be met. Private companies are perfectly capable of buying this property and cleaning it up and if you set the standards on what "cleanup" means now, the cards will be on the table. And, they would probably do a better job of it and come in under budget. They have to make a profit, the city doesn't: it just taxes us more when it goes over budget.

City's budget outlook worsens
From another article in today's paper:
"Agreed to spend $250,000 on sidewalk and traffic-calming projects this year."
Holy crap..... We have all the traffic calming projects we need... they are called POTHOLES.

City's budget outlook worsens
I could have sworn the county is wanting to raise the mil levy as well. Can someone confirm this?
