Douglas County makes case for tax hike

“There’s never a good time to ask for more money,” Thellman said, “but I think, at some point, there is a time to move forward on these initiatives that our community has talked about for a decade, if not more."

Personally, I couldn't agree more. Build the freaking highway already.

Repeating myself: this is new spending. This is not 'catching up' with paying the bills. They are in the depths of a down economy and doing the exact opposite of what they should be doing. November can't get here fast enough.

Douglas County to consider ‘jaw-dropper’ property tax increase of 16.6 percent

Playing 'catch-up' does not include:

"Pump $500,000 into a new economic-development fund, plus another $500,000 into a new fund to purchase and promote preservation and use of open space and other so-called “heritage” assets and activities."

Notice the phrase "NEW <whatever> FUND" in that item twice. That's a MILLION DOLLARS for additional spending. That's not catching up, that's more of the same crap that got us into this mess in the first place.

Should Gov. Parkinson sign the statewide smoking ban bill headed to his desk?

Good Lord if a place wants to allow smoking and you don't like smoking then don't go there. Holy cow when did the nanny state become so fine with everyone?

Will you watch the State of the Union address live?

Ugh, drunk and seeing two Obamas? I don't want to get sick or anything! I'm leaning more toward 'let me be clear' and 'transparent (or transparency.)' I think those two, plus any time Bush gets the blame, should be enough to do the job.

Will you watch the State of the Union address live?

So I just scrolled up and saw snap crackle already posted a different drinking game. I suppose I'll just co-opt those rules it sounds like a good way to get a quick buzz.

Will you watch the State of the Union address live?

Every year my wife and I play the SOTU drinking game so I will be watching. We choose a phrase we think he's going to use frequently and then drink when he does. A few years ago we did 'Weapons of Mass Destruction' and got HAMMERED. Still trying to decide on a phrase for this one. Maybe you guys n gals can help?

So far we're working with

1) (not really a phrase but qualifies) Every time he blames Bush or references 'the last 8 years'
2) "I feel your pain"
3) "Failed economic policies"
4) "Haiti"
5) "Wall Street/Main Street"

Those are the top 5, although I'm pretty sure he won't drop the 'feel your pain' line more than once or twice so it's probably out.

A Lawrence radio station switched its format from rock to country music on Thursday. Which music do you prefer, country or rock?

Now I don't have anywhere to switch from 98.9 when they go all commercials for hours on end

Should President Obama be lobbying on the city of Chicago's behalf to host the 2016 Olympics?

I thought we had a war going on somewhere and there was an important decision to make regarding sending more troops...

Seems like he has more important things he should be handling right now.

New American jobless claims make surprise drop

When Bush was president this would have been reported as jobless claims drop because "people simply gave up looking for work."
