I agree completely. We should spare no expense making our highways faster and safer. We need to tear out this entire stretch of 59 and rebuild it to be better, even if it costs a billion dollars, saving one life makes the difference.

I'm so pleased with the use of the proper lexicon that I'm even going to refrain from doing battle with the usual car-centric people who are still stuck in the 50s. The future is about moving under your own power-- get used to the idea.

Former state representative Solbach critically injured after ATV and car collide
As usual, a citizen chimes in to remind us all that this was just an "accident", a simple boo-boo that could not have been avoided. An accident implies that no one was to blame. It would appear that in this particular case, someone was to blame. I, too, hope he recovers, but his recovery is not going to be influenced by a few comments on an online message board.
May I ask when is the appropriate time to address these issues?
Also, I find it interesting that when a collision occurs between a car and an ATV, people are quick to jump on the motorist involved. Imagine, for a second, if the ATV had been a bicycle or a pedestrian. This message board would be full of the usual car-centric nonsense about how pedestrians and cyclists need to be cautious, etc. The double-standard is glaring. But I doubt I would sway the minds of the car-addled.

Good lord-- is the placement of the shifter really such a major problem? Perhaps if people put down their iGadget the arduous task of shifting from reverse to drive wouldn't be such an issue.

As I mentioned below, one of the common ways to get others to pay for your "experience of a lifetime" (i.e. riding your bicycle across America) is attach it to some kind of charity. It's a win-win situation-- someone else pays your way and you are seen as doing something noble rather than self-indulgent.

The reason some of us are cynical has to do with the transparent phoniness that pervades every level of our society. Speaking from personal experience, the people I've known who were involved with medical missions were of two types: the ones who kept their head down and did their job because they thought it was important and did so without fanfare, and the ones who wanted as much attention as possible. People featured in articles like this lead me to suspect that they are in the latter group.
