Yoder hears complaints of negative tone in Washington toward teachers, public schools

I am in total agreement with each of your points. I jhad ust wanted to validate Clara's point that cross country comparisons do neglect the fact that mainstreaming in US public schools is a factor in the disparities between scores. It's not the entire story but it is a significant part of it.

In Germany the standards are not nationwide. They are regional. It is well known that a HS degree from Bavaria is far superior to one from Berlin. It presents problems for students moving between regions. It is however true that teachers are well compensated and well respected.

I have been to Finland 4x. Recently while on a long ferry ride a teacher at a school for disabilities explained to us that Finland is very behind the US in terms of serving students with disabilities and that teachers such as he are interested in knowing more about the US mainstreaming model. He said these students are segregated into separate schools and they do not receive an appropriate education. In Finland one also does not see accommodations anywhere for persons with disabilities. In Germany, where I've lived and traveled and had a child in school, the same is true.

Faith group wants Lawrence residents to vote yes on affordable housing sales tax

In reviewing the article it looks to me like the 50 cents per $1,000 is currently earmarked for transit expansion and we are asked to vote on switching it to be earmarked for affordable housing. That would imply that we are already paying the tax anyway.

Bryan - You are absolutely correct that .05 (5%) of $1,000 is $50
This has not been well explained in the article or otherwise.
Here's the math: .05 x .01 = .0005 and that is 50 cents of every $1,000
What we are really talking about is a 5% share of an existing 1% tax

Author Maria Polonchek's reading in Lawrence to focus on parenting as an atheist

The world is often painted as black and white by parents who are hard core atheists as well. In many cases questioning and agnosticism are found to be a trait of the weak who are unable to accept the truth. It's so important to give children tools to be independent thinkers and also to be accepting of their choices. Spiritual beliefs are highly personal and fundamental to human identity. Opinion: Kobach, get acquainted with prison

I had the opportunity to tour a state prison in Vacaville, CA in 1994. It was one of the most bruatally enlightening experiences I have ever had. I have said ever since that every person of voting age should tour a prison.

Letter to the editor: Keep private

7 years ago my son died. I too experienced an invasion of privacy directly following his death, though not by this news outlet. Please display empathy for people who are experiencing devastating losses. If a story is news worthy, out of respect for those who are grieving, please think about the timing. It should be handled with sensitivity.
