Does creativity lend itself to addictions?
I am surrounded by musicians.
Many musicians believe that drugs enhance their creative process and open them to
inspiration. I think it sometimes starts out that way, and then becomes a problem with increased use, as with any addiction.
It's like having a baby tiger as a pet-- it might be fun for awhile, but as they grow you might get eaten..
I think many musicians learn early to deal with the stress of being on stage by drinking or taking pills. Most of the musicians I know do not have healthy self esteem. The ones who act cocky are even less secure.
I think many are looking for approval in a BIG way, and especially if they are playing original music, they are putting themselves "out there" publically to be targets of either approval or disapproval in a way that most of us don't ever experience.
As people get more famous and the pressure grows because the attention grows, then the insecurities get bigger and bigger and the addictions get bigger and bigger.
Will Smith seems to have escaped it.
