Lawrence man accused of raping 11-year-old girl

Frustrated One-the WRAP program is specifically designed for those who are showing signs of "behavioral" problems and or just needs someone to talk to. A child doens't have to be victimized before they go and talk to a WRAP worker. Same goes with BBBS. GaDuGi Safe Center does have their staff go and talk to the schools on a regular basis about sex and abuse. There are people out there that are trying to help and inform but can only do so much. That is why it is impairative that parents are educated in child development and learn how to effectively raise their children, so I do agree with you that parents need to talk to their children more. As far as background checks go, most agencies do in fact run the child abuse registry, national sex offender, KBI and sometimes even a diversion and DMV check.
I am a Big Sister through the BBBS program and I know for a fact that the case managers do talk to the parents and children about abuse, what are the indicators, what to do if your child tells you, what good touch and bad touch is, what the no-go-tell rule is, etc...
There are people out there that are trying to help but it is the parents that really make the difference, which is why it is so important that they are educated.

Lawrence man accused of raping 11-year-old girl

Well, one thing is for sure and this girl is going to need a lot more support than she ever had before. I'm going to assume that she will be in intensive therapy as well as seeing the school counselor.
Nobody gets to decide who has a crappy childhood and who doesn't...its sad but its the way the cookies crumbles. I didn't want my friend to be murdered but it happened anyway. The universe doesn't give a damn about us so we as humans and as caring individuals have to pick up the slack and help each other.
This poor girl will need a lot of support from her family and friends the most. It will be a long and painful road but you would be amazed at how just being there for a child can improve their state of mind. Maybe getting her a big sister from big brothers big sisters would be beneficial. This way she will have someone else to go to that isn't family or her doctor. The parents are going to need help themselves on how to adequetely deal with this as well. Its out there folks, you just have to know where to look...and that means that you sometimes have to ask for help.
The Parenting Education Initiative gives free seminars to anyone who is willing to listen. The next one is, oddly enough, called Community Resources-What's Available and How to Access Them. 7pm at the Gallery Room at the Public Library on March 2nd. I'm hoping this will be beneficial to those who attend.

Music Girl says: It's like just because my mom didn't love me enough I can be excused for any crime I commit…bs.
_____________________________________________
You should never start your sentences with, "It's like", if you want people to take you seriously.
Nobody is excusing the crime. Its obvious you know nothing about child development.
Regardless of parental skills or economic status, children who show signs of aggression/depression/apathy, etc...need an adult either at home or at school who will be able to recognize it and do something about it. Most future criminals show signs of this type of behavior at an early age. I guarantee those children who have been able to overcome their unfortunate past have had at least one significant person who has made a difference, whether that be a mentor, another family member, a teacher, you catch the drift. The significant person may even be the parent that the child wishes not to be like. That might be all the motivation they need to make good decisions about their life. Did you know that a child with an incarcerated parent is three times as likely to end up incarcerated themselves? That is insane and exactly why we shouldn't give up on our children and give them EVERY chance available to help them, whether that be therapy, a big brother/sister, tutoring and yes even classes for parents. Why do you think a good percentage of criminals do come from less than ideal homes! We should never excuse a crime but I'm willing to bet that this sick fellow showed signs as early as childhood.

KV-by the way the suspect was charged with Aggravated Indicent Liberties with a Child...meaning RAPE in EVERY sense of the word. Not fondling, not touching, RAPE. What is your opinion now?

Pitbull g'ma-completely agree with you. The WRAP program does work and it was aggravating to see the city get rid of it in elementary schools this school year. I am also afraid they will get rid of the program all together next year. I work with at-risk children and realize the value in having mental health workers in the school and have seen it work wonders. What a shame.

This sick guy has probably been grooming this child for months to get her to feel safe with him. Hard to say if this guy is a pedophile or a child molester. There is a difference. A pedophile is someone who is neurologically wired differently and truly believes that it is okay to have an emotional and physical relationship with a child. Pedopiles "groom" their victims and is usually a time consuming process. A child molester is someone who may or may not be motivated by sexual urges or interests for children. Child molesters often see the child as a substitute for an adult. There is no time period involved with child molesters...it is pretty instant on the urge and the victim is usually incidental. It can be hard to differenciate the two. Regardless, it is horribly wrong and this guy should be prosecuted to the full extent. Lock him up and throw away the key. My thoughts go out to this little girl and her family. This is something she will have to deal with for the rest of her life.

United Way raises $1.7M, just shy of goal

MadMike or for anyone who is interested, you can check out United Way's website at www.unitedwaydgco.organd actually see the agencies they support...and none of the organizations MadMike mentioned are on there. Do your research. For those of you that don't think Lawrence needs funding for non-profits, go in and tell that to the staff of Big Brothers Big Sisters, GaDuGi Safe Center, Boys and Girls Club or any agency on that list and I guarantee that they will tell you that there is a huge need for funding for the people they serve whether that being at risk children, homeless shelters, parenting education, meals for the elderly or victims of sex crimes...not to mention that most of the employees are overworked and underpaid. The United Way is a wonderful agency who helps thousands of people in this town who need it, help employ hundreds and we are incredibly lucky to have it. I sure hope MadMike doesn't have any family members or friends who utilize agencies such as The American Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, Douglas County Legal Aid Society or the Health Care Access Clinic. Serioulsy people, think about the families that actually utilize and need the agencies listed. I have not been in a situation where I have utilized any of these agencies but whose to say that my house won't be destroyed by a tornado this spring and I will need help from the Red Cross or The Ballard Center?
