What National Merit awards do and don't tell us

Peter Hancock,
Your article of last week stated:
"Of the roughly 16,000 semifinalists nationwide, about 15,000 will be named as finalists in February, based on their academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received."

It is my understanding the National Merit recognition is based SOLEY on the students' PSAT scores. I'd love to know a bit more about that. thanks.

North Lawrence residents, irked by a rash of thefts, find that many have gone unreported

I live in N. Lawrence and not long ago someone stole my dog poop scoop and an old bucket half full of poop out of my yard. OMG! I didn't report it. It seemed silly to report at the time, but maybe I should have. I am not one of them, but I have heard a lot of the residents in NL don't WANT street lights...I cannot confirm this.

Nursery business files plans to open farmers' market in West Lawrence

Hi Chad,
I wonder if you could address how the local produce markets are "screened." In other words, how does the public know who they are buying from and what pesticides are or are not used on the produce, etc. Not just the hopeful Clinton Parkway market, but all of those you've listed.
