Brick street renovation under consideration

One thing I've noticed is that brick roads don't slow drivers. The brick road could be wet and littered with pot holes and fools will still go 40mph down a residential street. (Even with street parking on both sides)

City slowdown

Sounds like Lawrence is tired of being a bedroom community. Here are some ideas to change that:

How about a city income tax? All income from within the city limits is exempted. Perhaps 0.5% for income that comes from Douglas county but not from Lawrence. Then a 1% rate for income from other counties.

Another idea is to tax the bedroom doors themselves. Yep, put toll gates on the major roads into the city. Charging $1 to enter exit the city during rush hour.

Raise property taxes significantly while introducing a refund program for regular people. (Like the Federal earned income tax credit) If your household makes less than the median income you don't pay any of this new tax. The refund would then be phased out for higher incomes. One property per household. (It's a residential exemption, not a business one)

These ideas, or variants of them, should discourage people from using Lawrence as a bedroom community.

Mayor seeks stricter gun law

These firearm city ordinances are nuts. If they are ever challanged in court they will be shot down. Here's a hint for anyone with a clean record busted for having a gun in their car or house: get a decent lawyer and you'll walk. (assuming you weren't using the gun to commit a crime)

Fiscal restraint

Tell me about it, 4 years in Larry now any my property taxes are up 44%. That's a 9.5% annualized increase. I could probably sell my house for 25% more than I paid for it. (Which is a 6% annualized increase)

The city blows through money at an amazing rate trying to be interesting. I'd like it better if things we under budget and boring.

Free lunch program under scrutiny

The 2006 HHS Federal poverty line for a family of 4 is $20k/yr in the 48 Contiguous States and D.C.

Free lunches if your family income < $26k/yr
Reduced lunches if your family income < $37k/yr

Seems reasonable to me considering it's just kids getting discounted school cafeteria food.

New design for gun signs unveiled at state hearing

People on these forums still don't get it. The "bad" people will carry regardless of the law. It's a wild concept the, most dangerous people arm themselves without registering. (or obeying no-gun signs)

The question becomes, what do we do about it? Some think we should disarm all the law abiding folks. Others, like myself, feel differently.

Latino Fest thrives in downtown venue

Yeah, I shouldn't associate the last vestige of real culture in this country with self appointed pundits on this msg board.

KS has a real low % of foreign born people yet a very vocal minority that complains about it. Apparently it's easier to be heard if you are ignorant. (or at least repetitive)
