Child on bike hit by car at Sixth and Rockledge in critical but stable condition

I am not surprised that a young boy was hit at 6th and Rockledge Road and taken to KU medical center. Cars race up the hill to beat the light. On several occasions I have come close to being hit when drivers fail to yield or even see me in the intersection. I called the city over a year ago and complained. They responded by putting up a sign that advised that traffic should yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk. I also mentioned the intersection at a city commission meeting and remarked that I had great concern that a child would be hit there if something was not done beyond a yield sign. I have been told that to change the light and stop all traffic so pedestrian could cross safely would be cost prohibitive. What will it take to get our city professionals and elected officials to act. My prayers are with the child and his family. Tess Banion

Penn State’s shame — and America’s too

Labels are easily applied, I have done it myself. I feel comfronted when I can explain the unthinkable with the use of a term, a word, a slogan. However, that does nothing to explain what happened at Penn State nor will it help to prevent it from happening at another institution.
