Rural Lecompton man dies after train strikes pickup truck northwest of Lakeview Lake

First of all, my thoughts and prayers go out to Kyle’s family as well as Shelbie and her family. The crossing on 950E road is on the corner of my property. I have traveled that crossing several times a day for the last 30 years. The visibility when traveling north on 950 E has never been very good. There is about 40 feet of flat road up to the crossing after coming down a 35-45 degree slope for about 3/8 of a mile. The contour of the land makes difficult to see down the tracks in either direction unless you pull right up to the edge of the crossing. The crossing is marked with cross bucks and there is a RR crossing warning sign about 500 feet back on both sides of the crossing. In the 40 years my family has owned this property there has been 2 accidents on these tracks in this 1/4-mile stretch, both of which have been in the last 12 months. Railroads do a great job educating the public with their Operation Lifesaver Program and the Look, Listen, Live motto. I hope you take the time to review this motto and railroad crossing safety with all drivers in your household.
