Early exposure to common chemicals may be programming kids to be fat.

In 2006 scientists at the Harvard School of Public Health reported that the prevalence of obesity in infants under 6 months had risen 73 percent since 1980. “This epidemic of obese 6-month-olds,” as endocrinologist Robert Lustig of the University of California, San Francisco, calls it, poses a problem for conventional explanations of the fattening of America.

As an undergraduate KU B-School student (1963-65) I commuted daily to Mount Oread from Sigma Nu's West Hills Stubbs Mansion without encountering any haunted spirits …

More recent archives research indicates these recurring urban legends surfaced sometime after 1998 when “Haunted Kansas” (ISBN: 070060930X) was published. “Evil Kansas” script writers adapted the unsubstantiated “Ghost of Virginia” scenario which inspired University Daily Kansan (UDK) reporters to relax their baseline “fact checking” practices.

I checked Kansas University's Watson Library microfilm records for the Lawrence Journal & Lawrence World that merged about the time the alleged “Windmill Hill” death happened in Spring 1911. I found the Stubbs were authentic “social responsibility pathfinders” whose community stewardship and political leadership have a global reach.

By working with Kaw Valley Heritage Alliance (KVHA) & Partnership for National Trail Systems (PNTS), the Freedom's Frontier National Heritage Area's US National Park Service Master Plan now provides a more authentic “tolerance-based” framework for shifting public perceptions.

After completing our cohort's 2005 Kansas Environmental Leadership Program (KELP), I began serving as a Kaw Valley Heritage Alliance (KVHA) board director championing eco-challenge venues for adaptive outdoor recreation.

For this joint program with Jayhawk Audubon Society (JAS), we modified KELP's Safe Water Assessment Protocol (SWAP) “scavenger hunt process” to rotate small (10-12 youth) groups through five place-based consequential learning stations at 20-minute intervals.

Each hands-on learning station has 1-2 “Citiizen Scientists” who guide each activity that reinforces a shared sense of imagination and place …
