Sheriff's office to ask county commissioners to reduce the number of seriously mentally ill jail inmates

The question of Rock Chalk Park vs. Mental Health Facility is entirely one of community values. We can blame our leaders, but I think it's more fair to blame ourselves. Our leaders tend to give us what we ask for in Lawrence. I think we care more about entertainment than we do about people. I fear this harsh sounding judgment may be the truth.

One of five defendants in Lawrence home-invasion robbery sentenced to probation

But that's the beauty of probation. If he's criminally minded, he won't survive three years probation without violating his conditions. Then, he's spending his probation behind bars.

Three arrested in East Lawrence

"every time I open the paper..."

Because articles about the many who don't get re-arrested don't sell papers. Many never return to crime, but that's not news.

Lawrence police bike patrol makes officers as visible, or stealthy, as needed

I was once pulled over by a cop on a bike about 25 years ago. I was in a car. True story.

Capitol Report: Drug testing for state benefits; Landwehr lands state job; Brownback changes tune on EITC

Keep in mind: Drug testing hurts the children of addicted parents. Innocent children will go without food and shelter because their addicted parents couldn't pass a urine analysis. Those kids didn't choose their parents, so we have to ask ourselves if we are OK with them suffering for the mistakes of their parents when we require drug testing.

Former Kansas inmate who killed 3 in DUI accident has parole revoked

This is the face of addiction: Someone near you, who is a lot like you, who maybe goes to your church or even teaches at your kid's school. How can she DO this after KILLING before??? This is how: She's not in control of herself the way that you non-addicted people are in control of yourselves. How sick in the head would YOU have to be to do what she did? Pretty sick in the head, right? That's her: Sick. When adequate funding isn't available for treatment, ordinary - but sick - people make these choices over and over again, until they find a way to get the help they need, or die from their addiction, or die in jail.

City to recycle old trash cans

My cart was put out the evening of the 15th, with an "X" on every side. It's still here. What happened to the 11/16 pickups?

Lawrence High English teacher $10,000 richer, thanks to guys named Bob

Mike is a great guy, and is probably best described as OVERQUALIFIED as an instructor. I wasn't at all surprised to see him get this award.
