Downtown Lawrence merchant group asking customers to stop giving money to panhandlers

Yeah, let's follow the examples of Germany and Japan in all things! Fabulous idea.

Downtown Lawrence merchant group asking customers to stop giving money to panhandlers

Lawrence Schools Foundation offering donors chance to help with district's budget troubles

lawrenceguy40 (Anonymous) says…

I have enough self respect not to want to force my neighbors to pay for my benefits.

OK, lawrenceguy40 ... from this statement, we assume you pay to pave your own roads, have your own private cops and fire depts, have your own self-financed military, your own private sewer system, and your own private water supply.

If you are using any of these public services, then you are just a welfare-queen, mooching off your neighbors. Oh, and a hypocrite.

Good suggestions

Thanks for this letter. Reporting on this vital community issue has been sorely lacking at the LJW. There are good solutions to the budget gap that wouldn't involve decimating important neighborhoods in the city. Maybe the city should consider granting the school district the millions of dollars it's contemplating blowing on a Sewer to Nowhere to attract developers near the airport. (A city in crisis that guts schools isn't going to be attractive to employers no matter the awesomeness of its extensive waste pipes).

Promoters of a day center for homeless families in east Lawrence neighborhood seek city approval

They're going to turn a very lovely Lawrence neighborhood into a homeless mecca. This idea stinks.

Store needed

We're already up to our neck in Wal-Marts here. Why doesn't some enterprising North Lawrencian start a community market? They just opened the People's Market in East Lawrence, which also is under-served. Perhaps a People's Market North?
