Five people injured in three-car crash on K-10, Highway Patrol says

Only the Kasold intersection was a part of the initial bypass that KDOT has now changed. There is an interchange at 15th Street and there should be one here too. By the way, if this intersection would have been allowed to remain the same, Kasold Drive is a better artery or convenient way to drive than Iowa Street.

This happened the first time I used the intersection after it was reopened and has frequently happened since. I've also waited for what seemed like an eternity for a car to proceed from the south into the acceleration lane because they were waiting for traffic to clear to enter the highway. Wish they would have gone ahead and installed traffic signals until an interchange could be built.

I was told that KDOT expected the City and County to pay for a large share of the changes made to this intersection. Never understood why the City, County, and people's voices were ignored.

Well, at least we are in agreement on one thing, 55 mph would be better and a safer option that people suggested to KDOT. However, KDOT is in such a hurry to turn the Bypass into an expressway or pay turnpike that they have ignored relevant suggestions from the people who are going to suffer for their illogical decisions.

Chase, the issue is not about drive time, it is about safety. Driving Iowa Street is more dangerous than crossing the bypass if there were traffic signals or an exchange like was built at 15th Street. Seems to me like you are the one complaining about a 2 minute inconvenience. This intersection was supposed to be kept open initially and now KDOT wants to turn the Bypass into an expressway or turnpike which was not the original intention.

Yes, we are in agreement, Franz. An exchange can be built at 15th St. but not for Kasold/Wakarusa Drive. it makes no sense, and a light can be installed on 27th St. for pedestrians to cross but a light on the bypass is unacceptable. Lawrence and KDOT are learning the hard way and the people are suffering from their decisions.

Radar, I attended the meetings and a traffic light was actually less expensive as opposed to right in/right out option according to KDOT numbers. By the way, KDOT said money was not an issue . If you drive/watch the intersection on a regular basis many people have ignored the barriers and this is the first accident. Hope someone is not killed next time.

Essentially, you have another good route since you are accessing the bypass from the city side or North, Ashley. People accessing the bypass from the County side or the South lack other good routes into Lawrence. Why is it necessary to funnel all travel from SW Douglas County onto Iowa Street? I believe everyone can agree Iowa Street is very heavily traveled and more access points to enter Lawrence should be desirable.

That is entirely false, Chase. I can tell you based on personal experience, it is a much more time consuming and aggravating drive. If someone from SW Douglas County wants to enter Lawrence West of Iowa the only access is across the Clinton Lake Dam and it is unable to support the traffic. KDOT missed the boat by not planning ahead to provide safe access through this intersection.

Iowa Street is already a nightmare, Chase. Since the change at the intersection I've had to drive that route and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. I don't understand why people are opposed to making the Kasold intersection safe and viable.
