What was a time when Valentine's Day went wrong?

24 years ago I had to work the first Valentine's Day with my boyfriend who had just moved in with me. I got home around 11:00 p.m. but he wasn't there. I asked our other roommates and they said he'd gone to Kansas City to go out with his friends. As if that weren't bad enough, I got a collect phone call from him around 3:00 in the morning telling me he was in jail for a traffic violation that resulted in a DUI. His bail was $500 and being a poor college student I didn't have it so I had to call his parents whom I'd never met and ask them if they would wire me money so I could bail out their son. Not a great start but amazingly we're still together and will celebrate our 22nd wedding anniversary this year. The secret to our longevity? He quit drinking and I learned not to expect much on holidays.

Lawrence commission approves downtown ice skating rink on split vote

$80K for an artificial ice rink that's not even going to be open all winter? It's going to be open less than 2 months! Pardon my verbage but that's just retarded. Way to be fiscally responsible commissioners - as if we'd expect anything more.

Cleanup continues after Lawrence hit with historic snowfall; several school districts close Thursday

I have *maybe* 50 feet to drive on my street before hitting Monterey Way - which is one of the quasi-major roads that gets taken care of first - but can I get out of my drive and onto Monterey? No. People get stuck at our corner every time it snows because of the slight incline and the extra snow piles that are plowed off Monterey. Am I mad at the city? No! It is what it is and I deal with it by either staying home or knowing that we have to shovel the street or we'll probably get stuck. The city can only do so much with what they have (plows and money) and people need to CALM DOWN!

What do you remember from your high school or college graduation speaker?

Didn't attend KU commencement and high school was a LONG time ago. I'm pretty sure I wasn't paying attention to the speaker because all I do remember was wanting the stupid ceremony to be over because the fellow I'd had a crush on for 3 years had just come home from his first year at college and asked if he could accompany me to our graduation party. Yeah, that was a good night.
