City's overtime concerns to affect Lawrence snow shoveling ordinance
You know, I really don't get this "law." It's about the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Why do we need sidewalk Nazis? Is this really worth having "inspectors" and fines?

Midge Grinstead reinstated as executive director of the Lawrence Humane Society
And again, I did NOT say anything negative about Midge. In fact, I said I commended her for all she HAS done and feel she has been wonderful in her fight for making the shelter a MUCH better place than it was (yes, I remember).

What are YOU doing about it? Do you just spout your rhetoric, or do you live it as well?

Midge Grinstead reinstated as executive director of the Lawrence Humane Society
Again, you have no idea what I do or don't do. I don't need to prove anything to you, but I do happen to be extremely involved in this issue. And yes, I've been to Best Friends and have been a contributor for MANY years. It's people like you that have no imagination and just want to say it can't be done that make it so hard. I have no idea where your animosity is coming from. I'm not the enemy. I'm trying to promote something positive and worthwhile. You seem to just want to bitch and be hostile. NO THANK YOU.

I have no idea what you're talking about. Any shelter can be no kill. It may take more donations, more volunteers, more work, but it's worth it to find forever homes (or a place for them to live out their lives). I personally don't know the kill rates/ratio, but for me ANY adoptable animal being put down is too many. And, of course, this all needs to be tempered with a massive campaign for spaying and neutering. It's worth it - ALWAYS worth it.

Okay, FIRST, you don't know anything about me or whether I donate, volunteer, etc. SECOND, I wasn't bitching, I was making a suggestion about how to improve the shelter and prove to clueless people like you that a no kill shelter IS possible, even if you take in every stray, sick animal, etc. Ever hear of Best Friends in Utah? It's the largest no-kill shelter in the US. They have set the standard and have PROVEN it can be done on a local level for ANY shelter. It would seem that you are the one who needs to do some research, take action and quit bitching.

Totally agree with bshm - while I am a big supporter of Midge's and admire all the work she has done, our humane society really needs an overhaul. Wayside Waifs is a much larger place and has a good system in place for same-day adoptions (and other options). Plus, we need to really consider making it a no-kill shelter (I know they are "low" kill, but it needs to be NO kill). We could really set a standard for how to do it right if we all support the idea! Welcome back Midge!

Lawrence transit system getting six new buses that are shorter and cheaper
Yeah - because SO many people ride the stupid bus in this town. Let's spend MORE money on it! Sheesh...

Lawrence voters approve $18 million library expansion
EXACTLY. The students (who are young, unemployed and liberal) vote YES because "Yay! Libararies are GOOOD!" and then they rent and don't pay taxes and then move out of Lawrence when they graduate. THANKS GUYS.

Lawrence voters approve $18 million library expansion
EXACTLY! At some point, Maggie Thatcher's quote comes into play - "The problem with Socialism (or in the case, taxing the rich) is that eventually you run out of other people's money."
