Lawrence lands major basketball tourney, but questions raised over how to use Rock Chalk Park rec center

I come to this discussion from a different place. Lawrence really needs tournaments like this, and here is why: despite being known as a basketball powerhouse at the university level, not enough coaches of D1 schools come to Lawrence to recruit high school athletes. (Do some research - how many D1 scholarships have been handed out to basketball players from LHS or LFSHS over the past decade?) It is a "known thing" that the level of competitive basketball play for kids around Lawrence from 10-15 years old is not that great. We have rec teams and then a step up to the "Hoopsters" league, but in order to foster the growth of the next generation of ball players, getting these sorts of tournaments to come to Lawrence is HUGE. And a really big deal to some kids. Not all kids, sure. The thousands of folks (literally) who descend upon these events means money in the pocket of Lawrence businesses. We need to make a strong effort to get people who are in town for these events down to Mass street to shop, to attend arts activities, to see a play at Theater Lawrence, etc. The moms I talk to during these tournaments are desperate for some retail therapy to break up the basketball marathons. If we make it hard for tournaments like this to happen at RCP, don't worry - lots of places in Kansas City will be GLAD to steal them away from us.

KU journalism professor condemned by administrators for tweet about NRA

Nicely said. All good points I'll have to think about. As far as whether I think he's an appropriate person to help form young minds? I think some of our best teachers are flawed, human. I think most Americans, no matter what their political stripes, are sincerely frustrated by the gun violence proliferating out of control. All of us want a simple answer, someone to blame. This tweet to me is just another frustrated American who probably should have thought before he tweeted...

KU journalism professor condemned by administrators for tweet about NRA

Just gave this a little more thought, and it occurs to me what a great teachable moment this is for a journalism professor. He can use this whole situation to train up the next generation of journalists to be perhaps a bit more social media savvy. He should get a pass on this, but it's true people need to be careful about what they write on social media. Looks like he went off, if you'll excuse me, a bit "half-cocked."

I support Professor Guth. Obviously he was adopting an overly didactic tone here, but the sentiment rings true for me. This ridiculous country can fix anything but our absurd gun-violence problem. If KU fires Guth, none of my children will attend this school. Some days I get so tired of living in a red state.

Lawrence residents say new garbage cans are stinking up the city

Seriously, it's not the end of the world either way. Squeeze a bit of soap in there, pour a bottle of cheap white vinegar in there from the dollar store, let it sit and dump it out. How bad could it be?

Folks who are really upset about this one - I've got some laundry for you to fold. Head on over, I'll put you to work.
