Editorial: Unsightly structure

For a parking garage...it looks pretty nice to me. After all, we are talking about a parking garage...for fluck sake. Got a little urban/contemporary look to it...to be expected as the downtown continues to grow (out/up).

As for the library building...can't wait for the finished product. Going to be a huge improvement to the area and a great investment in the community!

Former East Lawrence scrap yard may become unique housing development

I've known (not good friends) Matt Jones for a while now. Comes across as a really, really nice guy. He's an extremely talented carpenter/designer. Glad to see more money being infused into that section (just east of downtown) of Lawrence. Lived here more than 19 years...and that area has so much potential. Now, it really appears to be transforming with all the projects going on over the past few years.

Good luck Matt and company!

Kansans to receive $4 million in insurance refunds under Affordable Care Act, White House reports

My wife actually received a check from Humana yesterday in the amount of $57.25. With that being said, I don't anticipate her receiving a check next year given that she switched insurance to my employer's plan...as a result of us getting married last Summer.

Do you have anything of substance to back up your rant? In order words, can you dispute the claims regarding how the Affordable Care Act has indeed played a role in dramatically reduces the sharp rise in premiums (entire umbrella) over the last several years? Can you dispute the claims that 8.5 million rebates are being mailed out this year? These are topics specifically address in Obama's speech (see above link).

Again, nothing controversy about Obama's speech. He continues to be on message....much like the Republican party has continued on message by trying to appeal it for the 38th time....wasting considerable time/resources in the process.

A word of caution....Obama's comments in the speech contradict some of the claims/links in the above comments. Shocking....I tell you! :)

Here's another great speech (earlier this week) by President Obama discussing the refunds associated with the Medical Loss Ratio.

Good to hear that the Affordable Care Act, in this instance, is working as designed.

As for Lynn Jenkins comments....you can't make this stuff up! The Koch brothers are doing a hell of a job in pushing the buttons to get the robot (i.e. Jenkins) to spew out their talking points.

State education board seeks $656 million funding increase

Don't be so sure on that....

Like I said, the KS Supreme Court should have a decision around early 2014 (that's the estimated time for now). I think it is very, very likely (probably a 7-0 ruling) that the Court will remedy the case by making the Legislature increase funding. If the legislature refuses (initially)...the Courts will set a timetable to close the schools.

How far the battle goes....it's anyone's guess.

State education board seeks $656 million funding increase

IMO....the only thing surprising about the board vote was that it wasn't 10-0. OKAY...maybe not...given the politics of the State of Kansas....Ken Willard (for example).

With that being said, I keep saying over and over again how I can't wait for the KS Supreme Court decision on the school funding. Given that two studies (I believe that is the case) have shown that the schools are underfunded...I see another decision (thinking it will happen early next year) in favor of the plantiff. Probably be unaminous again.

Can't wait for Brownback and Co. response! They are going to have a real mess (financially/politically) on their hands come early 2014.
