Woman injured after being struck by vehicle on 23rd Street

" consumer1 11 minutes ago
YOu can get a ticket for crossing in the wrong part of the street, or by walking in the street. It is called pedestrian in the roadway. It is sad we have laws to protect people who should know better.''

And what do we call cars in the cross walk or past the stop sign at intersections? Cars parked on sidewalks, cars running reds? The list goes on, come champ are you saying it is ok to kick in the door of motorist breaking the law as just an unfortunate accident? What penalty do the poor motorist pay for their transgressions? Nothing is that answer, time for that to change.

We have a winner for the longest sentence heralding an illegal action!
All comes down to: you as a pedestrian are smaller and weaker than a car or truck.
Nuff said."

Bingo, the barbarism is alive and well. If that is what you strive for you have done well.

KiferGhost- do you know the injured or do you just really hate cars? It's hard to get a grasp on the vitriol behind your rhetoric.

I guess it is impossible for people to distinguish between bad driving and driving in general.

That seems like kind of a ridiculous "experiment." Why would you act like you "might enter" a street right into the path of an oncoming vehicle? Isn't that dangerous behavior in and of itself? You seem as unsafe as some of the drivers I encounter around here.

To test a theory, I didn't say I entered the entered the intersection, bad forbid a kid or animal does though.

bailee, so sorry to miss the suffer of the motorist thinking about the poor woman in the hospital. Yes prayers to the motorist yet what about prayers for all the pedestrians who have to deal quietly with the rude and dangerous behavior of motorist, many times intentionally threatening? Is it too much to ask people to step outside of their comfortable box and consider what others are dealing with? Why don't you demonstrate using crosswalks in your daily life, start walking everywhere in Lawrence and find out what it is like to be trapped by roads built for the convenience of motorist that generously allow the pedestrian a chance to cross many blocks apart.

KC that is like missing the trees in the forest, do you ever notice all the cars that constantly violate the law? It blows my mind that motorist can find the random and rare pedestrian, skateboarder, or bicyclist but miss what is constantly going on around them. There are so many car accidents in town the JW doesn't cover them so maybe the problem is extremely poor understand of what the motorist is suppose to be doing.

Of course, because in Lawrence if you aren't in a car you are fair game. Must make you proud to be reduced to the level of a barbarian. And what about the motorist, why can't they follow the speed limit and stop instead of running reds? That's all ok huh? Might as well not bring up driving according to the conditions which as you said it is busy which should mean driving slower and more defensively? I don't mean to bother you with good driving skills though, continue on like you are all that matters.

I wish the JW would do some pieces on urban planning and have discussions on mixed transportation options. It is a real shame Lawrence could be a real mecca, another Madison or Minneapolis supporting everybody's rights to get where they are going, choosing which means they want.

"Rabble rabble rabble rabble. Every stop light on 23rd street has a crosswalk. Also, it's not hard to see that traffic is busy and it might not be smart to cross where you are trying to cross. You can't blame the motorist for legally using the center turn lane. The blame falls on the NEGLIGENT pedestrian that decided to cross a busy 4 lane HIGHWAY during rush hour.(technically that part of 23rd st is also K-10) It's sad that it happened, but people make unsafe decisions everyday. Learn from it and become better."

It amazes me that people will come on and voluntarily admit that the motorist doesn't need to drive according to the conditions and can legally run people over in the street, whether they are there legally or not. That is what we have been reduced to, barbarians. And for those who think the crosswalks which seem close sitting on their can in a motorized vehicle ought to start walking full time and see how "convenient" they are. And again, if you are stopped in the crosswalk can I accidentally kick your door in? You know, you are stopped illegally.

Yes, by God, she was standing in the motorist way who has the right to run her down. What a civil society Lawrence is. It is more than four lanes by the way with the massive turn lane which of course, if you studied or cared about urban planning, creates huge problems for pedestrians. Again, even if she went to the crosswalk she will still face the same issues and deal with the snarling motorist blocking the turn lane or flying to get through the red. When will you apologist start making observations about all the illegal motorist actions? Again, if the pedestrian encounters a car in the crosswalk can we damage it?
