Longtime owner of East Lawrence's Sunrise Garden Center places business and property up for sale

subarooz: I have been buying my plants and trees at Sunrise for years, but I do understand what you mean. They can be a bit insulting when you ask a particular question about something. I just learned to brush it off, because I liked the quality of their plants and wanted to shop local. Howard Pine's is the same way - especially the fella who runs around the greenhouse in short shorts and a visor - I just try to avoid him when I go!

Residents upset at theft of American flags from retirement community

That was my understanding as well, that if a flag is flown at night, it must have a spotlight shining on it.

Letter: Missile message

Eh...I always though the rocket was just plain ugly. If for no other reason than this, it should be discarded and perhaps some abstract piece of art by a local artist put in it's place? The history is a bit disturbing, however. Ah well.

Popular breakfast restaurant Milton's returning to downtown in space currently occupied by Loopy's

Oh geez. Close Miltons - move to smaller space - open Loopy's - it fails - rename Miltons. You mean he seriously did not see this coming??

Opponents of drug testing for welfare benefits see it as hassling the poor; Brownback says it will help

I have received public assistance in the past and am receiving housing assistance now. However, I do not use drugs, and although I consider myself fairly progressive and liberal, I support the requirement of passing a drug test to receive public assistance. Why? Because I have seen too many people who are on assistance abuse the system, and it makes people like me, who are working to get off of assistance, look very bad. If you have money for meth, crack, pot or RX pills that you are abusing, then you have money for rent and food. Period. If you are not doing drugs, then you have nothing to worry about. And as for the comment that this is an invasion of privacy, well I have news for you, you already lose some amount of privacy if you go on assistance. Your bank statements are checked regularly, any 401K, any savings accounts or 529 Plans for your kids must be reported, if you receive housing assistance then you have to let the LDCHA come into your home at least once a year to inspect the conditions (I personally do not mind this, as it holds landlords accountable), if you are in college or any kind of vocational training, you have to submit class schedules and financial aid statements, etc. It is how it ought to be. Just mho.

Industry, beauty and antiques collide at North Lawrence corner

Nice shops, but seriously...the prices are INSANE at T&T and MFD, even for antiquities. Best to hit the little French themed shop directly East, and then keep heading East on Locust to BeBe's Cottage...a shop operated out of small building behind a private residence.
I prefer antique shops in Topeka and JoCo.

Local men at center of local 'K2' synthetic marijuana controversy brought up on federal drug charges

Agreed. I don't know what is worse, the vacant look on the father's face, or the smirk on the son's face. Talk to your kids, people. This stuff is dangerous! A friend of mine is an ER nurse and she has had some horror stories to tell about kids who are rushed in after smoking this crap. I would also have to say that I am proud to have never set foot into that stupid Sacred Journey "Herbs" store. I remember when they were crying about their rights being violated after prosecution for selling this stuff...and a handful of them, including some moron wearing fox ears, did a "parade" down Mass street in protest. Seriously?

Lawhorn's Lawrence: Three decades of defending and judging those in Lawrence's justice system

Never been on the opposite of his decisions, or ever met the man. Inbred? WTF? Sterilization? Seriously? What a monster. Frightening to think that this neo-Nazi was allowed to judge the fate, literally, of so many people when he holds to this kind of thinking.
