Brownback wants to examine mental health services
The gunman killed 27 people, not 26. His first victim was his mother.

Editorial: Proactive approach
I would hope that university representatives would also argue more strongly for salary increases for classified employees while arguing strongly against the eight-percent reduction. At the very least, university presidents should have declined their salary increases this past year as a sign to classified employees that they think they are being treated unfairly.

Officials vow to fight for NBAF funding
Seems to me that if they were going to do it, bio-terrorists would have compromised our food supply by now. why would they wait until this facility is built so we can study ways to prevent them from doing just that? It's just as likely that we'll create our own crisis with an unintended (or intended) release of a pathogen which will result in serious unintended consequences. Quite simply, this is the result of hype created as a result of 9/11. Nothing has happened since then that warrants spending money to build this facility. Roberts (and others) just can't admit they were suckered by the industries that stand to benefit into believing there was a need for this facility -- veterinary pharmaceutical companies, defense contractors, engineers, etc. Corporations benefit, local residents, farmers, and ranchers will not.

KU Medical Center in middle of abortion legislative fight
Then you and I need to meet. I have never once regretted the decision I made to terminate my pregnancy. Not once. Women who do typically feel regret regarding other matters surrounding the decision to have an abortion and use the abortion as the excuse.

KBA restart
The Legislature would be doing Kansas taxpayers a big favor if they would dig a little deeper to see what connection there is between Thornton and the fact that Manhattan was selected for the site of the National Bio- and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF).

Bioscience success
I wouldn't blame any company for choosing Lawrence over Manhattan. Manhattan's current city commission is doing everything it can to send our community back to the dark ages. The Tea Partiers on the commission repealed a rental inspection ordinance that was sorely needed and repealed our local discrimination ordinance that included protection for sexual orientation and gender identity before it could even be implemented. Now it's okay for employers or property owners or business owners to discriminate against someone because they're gay. They also refused to provide $15,000 as the city's match for a federal grant of nearly $450,000 that would have allowed our community to implement a fixed route bus system. They also plan to eliminate all taxpayer funding of social services and saddle the county with the full financial responsibility for our health department (funding had been shared between the city and county the previous 20+ years). They also want to reduce funding for police protection. Again, wise decision on the part of this company and I am sure many others will follow suit.

Brownback suggests veto if Legislature reinstates funding for Kansas Arts Commission
It would be nice if people could make their points without making derogatory comments about others. Comments like that do nothing to give your point any credibility. They make you look just as foolish as the governor. Oops, I'm sorry -- I just did the very thing I criticized you of doing. My bad.

Brownback administration lays off Kansas Arts Commission employees
Those who support the Kansas Arts Commission already open their pocketbooks in support of the arts. To suggest otherwise demonstrates a lack of understanding (dare I say ignorance?) as to how the arts are funded and how the little bit of funding from the state leverages other funds. And while the state jobs Brownback just eliminated are government jobs, the ripple effect will eliminate private sectors jobs. Nonprofit sector jobs are private sector jobs. The people in those jobs give of themselves way beyond what they are paid and what they are worth.

Hiring process
Based on this editorial, one could conclude that KSU and PU had to settle for lesser candidates because good ones did not apply because of the process was too public.
Sounds as if the Regents might be entering into one of those "secret deals" that just caught KSU up short.

Ongoing effort
It's folly to think that Kansas is going to be selected for the NBAF. The site selection is purely political. It's no coincidence that the announcement regarding the site is going to be made in October 2008, just one month prior to the presidential election. So, think about which states are critical to the GOP??? It ain't Kansas. Georgia? Yes. Texas? Most definitely. And I would hardly characterize Manhattan's airport as "regional" and it's nearly non-existent air service doesn't make the connection to Kansas City a very attractive option.
