City of Lawrence to consider running events expected to bring thousands downtown

It would be interesting to know how much money actually goes to the charity named. I think the city should ask for that accounting for every event that police and clean up are requested to be paid for. I bet they'd be surprised where the money actually goes. These big races are for profit and the taxpayer should not pay for the police and clean up.

Offbeat Occupations: Scuba instructor makes 300 dives per year, despite living in landlocked Lawrence

There couldn't be a nicer guy than Dave. I have seen photos of his dives and met people who go on his trips. The trips are professionally organized, the locations beautiful, and the divers continue to sign up for more. Without a doubt, he is a gem!

Ugly Sweater Run

The website for the Ugly Sweater Run makes no mention of raising money for charity. They are only asking that participants bring a toy to be donated to Toys For Tots. Did ANY of the proceeds go to charity?

School consolidation group split on recommendation

The elementary schools have given rooms vacated by the 6th graders to the Boys and Girls Club- thus elemementary overcrowding. No bond issue is necessary. The next thing the "task force" will recommend will be a third high school. All of these needs could have easily been taken care of with the money illspent on highschool sports facilities. NO BOND!!!!

Retiree taxes

I have a friend who lives in Colorado Springs, has a house worth $250,000 and his property tax is 1/2 of what it would be in Lawrence. Lawrence is so expensive that people are moving out to surrounding towns like Eudora.

School consolidation working group wants to reassess mission

Myself and many others will work AGAINST a bond issue. This superintendent doesn't have the pulse of the people. He was brought in to close schools-then he will move on while our community deals with the carnage. Just like the former board. They are off now, and the damage is done. TALK to the teachers and see how they feel. Not one on any level is happy.

Consolidation group readies for school board conversation

No one in this community should ever vote for a bond issue. There was a reason for the reconfiguration-to build a third high school. It is at the expense of all of our kids K-12.

Theatre Lawrence receives city funding to help with new $6.2 million theater

Way to go, City Commission! This is a great thing for Lawrence. Most people objecting have never gone to a production there. Go and you'll see how lucky Lawrence is to have community theatre of this caliber.
