Double Take: Aunt fears niece’s clothing too provocative

Society---at least a civil one---is a commonwealth. It is, in the broadest sense, an extended family. The coherence of society relies on the most able and wise people (normally older people) being considerate of human differentiation while acting to ensure that the young, and the otherwise less able, attain to the basic rights which are the nature of adults as such. After all, there is no point, nor purpose, to being an adult if these rights are, in effect, denied by the culture of elders. What this means in ‘western’(ized) nations is that immodesty in clothing is not driven by freedom of choice, but by a lack of commonwealth. Freedom of choice does not drive choices, it merely allows them.
