New House Education Committee chairwoman sees busy session ahead with finance, collective bargaining issues
Clearly it's her experience in slash and burn that qualifies her to be the education czarina.

Huelskamp and his iPad in middle of revolt against Boehner
If they had been Kansas legislators in 2007-08 would they have tried to block the legislation that provided $32 million in State funds to Greensburg? I don't remember if the approx. $80+ million from the feds required Congressional approval. I wonder if Huelskamp & Friends believe that Greensburg should have turned down the federal money? What would Greensburg look like today without that State and federal aid?

2013 Preview: Conservative charge looming in next session of Kansas Legislature
"Most notably, the moderate attempts to balance opposing views and tries to discern a gradual course that maintains the tension between alternative views, thereby maintaining the viability of both as a type of checks and balance."
This moderation is what we seem to have lost. I haven't seen anyone opining that government take-over by either extreme is good for the people. I don't, however, see the extreme left robbing the poor (e.g., eliminating tax credits for the working poor) to benefit the rich (e.g., lowering tax rates of the wealthy). Government policy in Kansas is heartbreaking. Our State leaders loudly and repeatedly proclaim that they are Christian. Clearly, they are simply "Ians."

I think it's more near term than "the coming years."

Do you think 2013 will be a better year than 2012?
Better for whom? For me and my family? I hope so. For the 99% nationwide? It's possible, depending on how the fiscal cliff and budget issues are resolved. For Kansas children and families in poverty and/or in need of services? No way.

Americans for Prosperity calling on legislators to sign anti-tax pledge
You do know that the unemployment rate is (1) a lagging indicator, (2) doesn't reflect the unemployed who are no longer looking for work, (3) doesn't reflect those who've left the state to find a job elsewhere and (4) doesn't take into account the unemployed who do not or who no longer collect unemployment? It truly does NOT mean we're in better shape. Buffalo Commons.

Sound Off: School security
One of the early news articles (NYT, I think) reported that he had tried to buy a gun but was unable to get a permit. If true, his initial planning may not have included using his mother's weapons.

Sound Off: School security
I have a short question for those of you posting on here who are advocating armed security guards: Who do you propose pay for those armed guards?
Does it seem to anyone else that the same legislators, Congressional members and pundits who advocate against adequate funding for schools are calling for armed teachers and armed security guards?
I don't get it. Or maybe I do, and I don't want to accept the illogical rhetoric.

Lawrence man arrested on charges of driving drunk with infant in vehicle
Why was an 8-month old "in the passenger seat"? Guess it's a stupid question. If he would drive drunk, if he would drive drunk with a child in the car, then he would drive with a baby/child in the passenger seat.
A Christmas miracle that "no one was hurt."
