Editorial: Assault action

I wouldn't say it's a growing problem, but a problem that's always existed and was rarely acknowledged in the past. DOD stats have shown for decades that around 30% of women service members will be sexually assaulted at some point in their careers. I think from what we know about sex crimes in general that we can assume that number is probably twice what's actually reported. This is another example of something that has been a problem for a long, long time finally being an issue because it's become a hot button issue in the media.

Watkins Museum to mark Veterans Day with speaker, exhibit

If you're looking to spend some time with some real American veterans on Veterans Day, skip the Watkins Community Museum and go to the American Legion Post behind the Spangles on 6th Street where the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Posts will be holding their Veterans Day ceremony at 11:00AM on Sunday. Or participate in the KU Veterans Association Veterans Day Run in South Park at 9:00AM Sunday morning and help support scholarships for wounded veterans returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Of course, you'll never hear about anything like that in the Journal-World.

KU AD Zenger: Memorial Stadium changes coming ... just not for a while

They need to be careful to maintain, and wherever possible improve on the Memorial Stadiums role as the memorial the University built to the 127 students and faculty killed in action in World War I. I would hate to see Memorial Stadium become just another shrine to big business, and football while the soldiers and their sacrifice is forgotten.

D-Day memories still vivid for local veteran, 94

Awesome piece about someone I think is a true American hero. I'm sure that like so many vets he'd say he was just doing his part, but I think they're exceptional people who've done extraordinary things. Too bad our President can't take time out of his busy schedule to acknowledge what they did for the world.

Lawrence VFW may be able to replace some missing flagpoles in time for Memorial Day

What kind of scumbag steals from the VFW? Actually it's not that surprising in a town like Lawrence...

Military spouse hopes to build up support network for families

Did she ever contact the VFW Ladies Auxiliary or American Legion Ladies Auxiliary? I know most of those ladies are elderly now, but they were Ashley's age with young families once, and the organizations still exist to serve the same purpose. Great work, I hope she keeps it up.

Details of Brownback’s tax plan revealed

Robbing the poor to pay the rich, unbelievable. I can't believe people keep falling for this flat tax, trickle-down BS after we've seen irrefutable evidence in the last couple decades that all those policies do is shrink the middle class, increase poverty, and radically increase wealth disparity.

Governor recommends funding for Lawrence SRS office

When did Sam Brownback become a big government liberal? Seriously, not only is he not raping and pillaging social services in Kansas, now he's proposing new agencies and expanded government!
