100 years ago: East Lawrence residents concerned about mysterious woman in black

I am impressed that 100 years ago Kansas was a progressive state. I guess its abolitionist roots were not so deeply buried yet.

Kansas agencies not recognizing gay marriages yet

Although it isn't fully settled yet, same-sex marriage will soon be a non-issue as far as the courts are concerned. In the Culture Wars, the Right-wing has lost the same-sex marriage battle. Gov. Brownback is expressing a sad incivility in his reaction. Such a poor loser. And such a bad Christian. When are the fundamentalists going to learn what the definition of "neighbor" is as in, Love thy neighbor? If it wasn't so mean-spirited and evil, it would be funny.

100 years ago: Lawrence participates in national prayer day for peace in Europe

The great moral issues of a century ago, peace and prohibition, proved to be will-o-the-wisps. It isn't that they weren't noble goals, they just are too personal for huge groups. Alone the single person may be an agent for peace and personal self-control. Forcing others to do the same is thought-control.

Lawrence school officials weigh pros and cons of later start times for teens

Don't blame social media. I taught high school for forty years and I can state clearly that the adolescent brain doesn't truly wake up until 10 a.m. Academic classes in the morning and electives and physical education, team sports, etc. in the afternoon.

KU professor helping identify important sites, events in LGBT history

Wonder if the National Park Service will also gather scholars to identify the sites where people have struggled to achieve the right of a woman to control her own body?

What is your reaction to the Supreme Court’s ruling in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc.?

Not one woman has written a comment here. Silence can be very loud.

Letter: Offensive ad

Rack of lamb, matzoh and wine would've been better, I suppose.

Kansas House gives final approval to bill backing out of Obamacare

But this was originally a Republican plan. Why can't the Republicans just see the President's white half and help get people insured?

School funding fix may get linked to teacher licensing, other policy changes

Loosening the standards for granting credentials to teachers is the worst possible thing to re-invigorate education in Kansas. How very sad that the state that prepared me so well in the 1950s and 1960s has sunk to being the butt of late night comedians. The Republican Party and its fundamentalist Christian base do not want thinking people.
