A sweet devotion
Up close with the bees
As a team, Anthony and Tony Schwager work together when it comes to harvesting the honey from their more than 180 beehives throughout Douglas County and the surrounding area.
Reaping a golden harvest
Getting the honey from the hive to the table requires a bit of cooperation from the bees - with the sun, some smoke and a lot of know-how to go along with it.
What was your first experience with bees?
"When I was a kid, we lived on a little farm in Arizona, and a friend of ours had bees on the farm. And I wanted nothing to do with them. I didn't like the bees. I wasn't the least bit curious or interested or anything in them. Just working with Anthony and learning about them, it got pretty fascinating." - Tony Schwager
Busy as a bee
Tony Schwager, center, prepares tools with his son, Anthony, left, and wife, Terri, to extract honey from one of the family's beehives. The family business, Anthony's Beehive, was started when Anthony, who has a developmental disability, saw a video about bees in school and asked his parents to get him some of his own.

Great story... Congrats Anthony on all of your success so far! I had Mr. Schwager (Tony) as a teacher in high school... he was a great teacher and person, and I'm sure his son is much the same way.

Your bee's honey is wonderful, you have a gift. Thanks to parents who believe in the creative spirits of their children, and the children who are lit with a passion to create. We can learn so much from you Anthony!

leadstone, here is the instructions for making mead. I always wanted to have an apiary.
It is really great that Anthony is doing this. Anyone is lucky to make a living doing what they love.
I have a feeling I am going to be buying something from their store.
