Hidden Heat: Concealed carry in Kansas

The test

Journal-World Reporter Chad Lawhorn, left, receives instruction from Max Miller, a Lawrence police officer who also is a licensed firearms instructor, on Monday July 30, 2007 at the Fraternal Order of Police firing station near Lone Star Lake. An eight-hour training class is a prerequisite for carrying a concealed weapon in Kansas.

A firsthand look at what it takes to carry a concealed weapon

We were talking about shooting a man. I mean we were really talking about it. It wasn’t just this idle, full-of-you-know-what, usually inappropriate chit-chat based on the flick you caught at the theater last weekend. Max Miller was telling us the ins and outs of shooting a guy.

The paperwork target

County’s application process cumbersome

This has been the hardest part. Buying a handgun was odd, but it wasn’t particularly hard. Taking a shooting test to qualify for a concealed handgun permit was a bit nerve-wracking, but at the end of the day it wasn’t anything to lose sleep over. But the paperwork - it’s always the paperwork that gets you.

Stephen Dickey, of Lawrence, fires a round out of his Browning .22 handgun Wednesday Jan. 9, 2008 at the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department's Community Building, 115 W. 11th St.

Community Building houses firing range

George Pisani leans against an old cafeteria-style table, stacked full of magazines like Gun Tests, Field & Stream and Shotgun News. A story is flowing among a group of guys about shooting wild boar at Clinton Lake. The quandary is whether a 9 millimeter will be a big enough weapon to handle the task at hand. No guarantees that it will is the general consensus.

State issues 10,000 permits

Miami County - home to Paola and Osawatomie - has the highest number of concealed carry permit holders per capita in Kansas. That’s among the details contained in statistics from the first year of operation of the state’s concealed carry program.

These stories are noteworthy and informative. Thanks Chad.

These stories "can" be informative if everything is researched correctly and presented fairly. Unfortunately, in my humble opinion both as a reader and a former News Director. This has really been over kill (sorry no pun intended) on the part of the LJW. The paper clearly has an agenda beyond educating and informing the public. Too much "opinion" has been added which harms the journalistic value of the stories.

If you are not in law enforcement or the armed forces and you carry a gun, then you are a paranoid wimp.end of story.

The .22 has been used in more assassinations worldwide than any other caliber.

Here is how some of the comments will go:guns = safety = tools = men's privates = name calling in general; We will hear from Robert Marble soon, and he will call those opposed to guns "bedwetting liberals;"I'll say I don't own and don't want to own a gun, but support others' right to own, and that I support the concept of training for all;Marion will misread my comments and call me bad names;"Guns don't kill people ... but they help;" etc., etc."Nazis ... Australia ... statistics and murder rates ... Obama will take your guns ... McCain will pander to NRA lobbyists;" etc., etc.,And it won't make one bit of difference. Somebody shot the horse. It is dead. Next.
