- The Basgall family comes back to Lawrence every summer, mostly to see Grandma. But the timing is perfect for summer sports camps. Greg and Stacey’s 9-year-old son, Alec, came back for the second time to the Kaw Valley Soccer Association’ Advanced Skills camp so he could pick up some skills for when he plays the game back home- in Japan.

- The Phenix U10 team at the Phenix Spring Classic: third. Playing in Basehor last week at league: second. Competing in the Best of Kansas City: first. A coach who built his own ball field in the country so the team can always practice: priceless.

- It looked like the Pirates were going to beat the Red Sox until the final inning at Ice Field last Wednesday. That’s when the Red Sox scored seven runs to win 11-5.
- Free State/LHS football camp grows to over 100 participants

- About 10 years ago, having 25 kids at the Lawrence High School and Free State High School football camp was considered a good turnout. But each year, the camp continues to grow in popularity. Last week, head coaches Bob Lisher and Dirk Wedd greeted 140 participants.

- Riny deBoer said she wanted players to experience the concept of playing soccer in the park with whoever happens to show up. So, four years ago she created what she calls “Street Soccer.” She regularly gets about 30 players showing up now Monday nights at YSI.
- KVSA camp stresses fun, fundamentals

- The Kaw Valley Soccer Association put on a developmental camp last week that was open to all ages. They had 30 participants, ranging from 4- to 12-years-old. The focus of the camp, led by coaches Gunar Harmon and Gretchen Yencic, was to develop individual skills, especially since the kids were so young.

- The battle between the Flame Hawks and the Jets in the Parks and Rec Rookie Baseball League got off to a quick start as each team scored five runs in their first at bats.

- The Clippers took a quick 10-0 lead against the Pistons after one inning of their DCABA baseball game Monday night and never looked back in eventually winning 30-8.
- Triple play highlights Team 9 Rookie Softball game

- Friends and family filled the stands for the second T-ball game for both Team 9 and Team 11 in the Parks and Recreation league. With the hot sun streaming in their faces at Youth Sports Inc., many cheers could be heard in support of the girls, whether they were up to bat or in the outfield.
- LHS shooting camp aims to improve form

- Mark Laskowski, who graduated from playing center at South Junior High School to hopefully suiting up for Lawrence High this year, said he thinks he already has a head start in his preparation for prep competition thanks to his participation in LHS basketball coach Chris Davis’ shooting camp.
