Hoss paces Lions to third

By Kelly Rathbun Twisting and tumbling were part of the norm Monday night at Lawrence High, where the LHS and Free State gymnastics teams played host to the Lawrence All-Around Invitational. The Lions placed third in the team competition, while FSHS took 11th. Shawnee Mission Northwest won the team title.

By Kelly Rathbun Kansas University volleyball coach Ray Bechard was impressed with what he saw Saturday night at the Horejsi Center as his Jayhawks snapped a two-match losing streak. KU overcame a strong Colorado defense to post a 30-24, 30-27, 21-30, 30-26 Big 12 Conference victory.

By Kelly Rathbun Kansas’ women’s soccer team physically and emotionally dominated Illinois on Sunday at SuperTarget Field, but one mental mistake with just 14 seconds left cost the Jayhawks the game and their second victory.
Softball tourney receives rave reviews

By Kelly Rathbun Credit Bob Stanclift and the Lawrence Parks and Recreation department with a hit. Stanclift successfully organized the first Class D Amateur Softball Association men’s state tournament at Clinton Lake Sports Complex over the weekend.

Baldwin Lumber opens with 15-8 victory

By Kelly Rathbun Thirty-two teams descended upon Clinton Lake Sports Complex Saturday in hopes of placing high in the Class D State Men’s Slow-Pitch tournament. One is Baldwin Lumber, managed by Stan Cromer. Baldwin Lumber has been in existence for nearly 15 years, and plays in this tournament each year.
ASA tourney set for today

By Kelly Rathbun Slow-pitch season isn’t over yet. Lawrence will play host to the State Class D ASA tournament today and Sunday. Games are scheduled from 8:30 a.m. until 9:20 p.m. today and from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday at Clinton Lake Softball Complex.
Raiders sweep twinbill

By Kelly Rathbun Umbrellas dotted the landscape Sunday afternoon as Lawrence’s Raiders rolled over Emporia, 4-3 and 11-8, in American Legion baseball at Free State’s field. This time the fans weren’t seeking protection from rain.

By Kelly Rathbun To the untrained eye, Ross Nwachukwu looked on top of his game Saturday at the Lawrence Open at Lawrence Tennis Center as he defeated Kevin Braun, 6-3, 6-0. But the former Kansas University men’s tennis coach said that’s not really the case.
Valverde wins in Lawrence Open

By Kelly Rathbun Jorge Valverde does more than talk about winning. Valverde, a sports psychologist, walked the walk on Friday at the Lawrence Tennis Center when he beat Lawrence’s Steve Vogel, 6-3, 6-3, in the men’s 4.0 singles division of the Lawrence Open.
Phenix off to fast start

By Kelly Rathbun Ted Juneau is a happy man. His 14-under Phenix softball team went 3-0 on Saturday at the Patty Heitzman Memorial Tournament. The Phenix surrendered one run and two hits in its first two wins.
