FSHS grad Hughes comes up big at Kansas Shrine Bowl

For two quarters of football, Tye Hughes’ Kansas Shrine Bowl experience was forgettable, to say the least. But Hughes, a recent Free State High graduate, made up for his shaky start with a 19-yard touchdown catch with 15 seconds left in the period, propelling the East team to 22-19 win at Washburn University’s Yager Stadium. Tonganoxie High handed McPherson a 3-1 defeat in a Class 4-1A state soccer semifinal Friday at Piper High School. Matt Saathoff had a hat trick, and Keaton Truesdell recorded 29 saves to propel the Chieftains (16-3-1) to their first state title game.
